i heard that 640*480 is enough for most dvd players if your projected image is not too large. what if i want something large like at least 100", what happens? will it still work? also, are 1.4 million colours enough?
In my opinion 1.4million colors is not enough. DVDs r genereally 16million. 640x480 is also in my opinion not enough for DVDs with an image of 100" diagonal. Work out the width of a 100" diagonal image (I can't be bothered with maths right now, too sick) and then divide that by 640 and thats how wide one pixel will be. 800X600 should be enough for DVDs but you also must take into account screen door effect, which is like pixel seperation, and the smaller the pixels, the less obvious. Which is why many people are going UXGA.
I have to disagree. Most LCDs, including mine, display 256k colors. It's the controller that accepts a 16.7 million color input, and down-converts it. Therefore, the monitor may boast 16.7M, your display settings are set to 16.7M, but in actuallity it's 256k. 65k (16-bit) is about where you will notice loss of colors. It is very difficult to tell the difference between 256k and 16.7 when watching video, so I would imagine that 1.7 million is just fine.
The only case I think where you would notice the difference is with gradient still pictures. But in the case of DVDs, the MPEG-2 compression will usually F up any gradient images anyways, so it won't matter. I really think motion pictures will not suffer, but some still images might.

My projector was 7.5 feet at 640X480... Looked great watching world rally! Keep in mind though, with many panels you will have macrovision issues and may need a tv-3000. For 100 (8.3 feet) you will have a nice looking image. I could have gone much bigger than 7.5 feet and not have much screen door effect, but my overhead projecter simply is not bright enough, and the free space on my wall ran out.
It all really comes down to personal choice. I think it's not enough, others think it is. Best thing to do is try and set your current monitor to 1.4m colors and 640x480 res and see if its good enough. If 640x480 is too pixelated on your monitor, then it'll be pretty bad magnified so many times, even if you are reasonably far back. I'm really too picky nowdays, as now I go to the cinemas and more often than not see flaws in the image and sound than just sit back and enjoy the film. 🙁 I've become a sad case.
