Hello, recently my integrated amplifier-a 1970's Sony started developing some strange sounds in one channel. When you turn it on, there is a crackling sound in the left channel for a few seconds, and sometimes this crackling can be heard while playing music too (in the left channel also). What kind of things could be causing this? (transistors going bad??) tia

Radio Shack has spray cans of electrical contact cleaner for pots and switches and such. But there are other things like intermittant components, pc board connections etc that can cause crackle. Often you can narrow down the problem by wiggling knobs or "thumping" things with a plastic screwdriver handle. If it's a dirty control or switch it usually shows up that way. If that doesn't lead you to the culprit, the next step is to carefully freeze individual components with Freon freeze spray... that'll usually help identify intermittant components.
