Hello, I have a tektronix 465, I bought it used with out probes a few years ago for around 30$.
the scope powers on and I can adjust the back light for the screen scale, but the CRT does not seem to be on, is there anyway I can verify the CRT is functional or not without having a probe connected?
I am a total noob with scopes so hopefully someone can help me figure this out.

bought it at a swap meet as is, the person selling it was selling lots of electrical testing stuff from a lab, he didn't know much about the equipment. so I am not sure.
Getting a trace to show for the inexperienced can be challenge 🙂 butI would have though you would have seen some signs of life.
As a general rule, first put the brightness on full, focus in the middle, and the trace centering controls in the middle.
Do not connect any probes, and make sure the triggering is set to internal and auto.
Not familiiar with your model so have a play with the trig controls... they are the usual cause of no trace.
If still nothing it's not looking good. Do you see any light if you switch off and then on again immediately ?
Next steps, top off and have a look. Make sure the CRT isn't damaged, are the heaters lit (there may be high voltage on the CRT so be careful).

IIRC that scope should have a "Beam Finder" button on the front panel. If it does, push it. The "Beam Finder" limits the range of the vertical and horizontal amplifiers and cranks up the CRT drive. If there is no display with "Beam Finder" pushed you have a CRT or HV issue.
