Hi all
Similar to my threa about a DAC Product based on the WM8741,
I am really interested to hear a DAC Product based on the AD1862 DAC Chip.
Does a ready-made product exist and is possible for purchase (new), in 2020,
or the only option is to build one?
Thank you

Since AD1862 has been out of production for a fair while, you'll not find a mainstream manufacturer making product based on it. Boutique will be one way to go - which is never cheap. The other two ways are DIY and Taobao - the latter will be questionable SQ but hopefully not expensive.
<edit> I forgot MHDT - they're boutique but without the usual boutique mark-up. But I don't know if they have an AD1862-based DAC.

Is it possible that Analog Devices has some newer (still in prouduction) DAC Chip that is as good (or even better) than the AD1862?Since AD1862 has been out of production for a fair while
I raise this option, since I was quite surprised with the sound of a CS4398 DAC that I bought 2 years ago - SMSL M3.
It is Vout, Delta Sigma, Over-Sampling, and all the other things that may cause us to think it would not be a good sounding DAC,
yet it is.
It is amazing in fact.
So from it I can conclude that a new DAC can sound very well (in fact it was the best one I found, and the one I stayed with, after trying about 20 different DACs),
so in the same direction, there might be a newer and recent DAC that is as good?
Anything you can recommend from your latest experiments/purchases?
Why buy another one when you have an amazing DAC?
If you are that satisfied maybe pimping the CS4398 DAC makes sense. Or go the FDA way. No DAC needed 🙂 I am amazed that not many seem to notice but Denon PMA60 is a very good example. I had the PMA50 before which was good but the PMA60 is slightly better and it is a nice and complete solution with many inputs for digital devices. Forget about the analog inputs though, they are the worst.
There will better amplifiers out there but not so complete and ergonomical as this one. No separate DAC needed and still high res/DSD capable, no preamp needed, no FIFO/low jitter add ons, just 1 device for everything. It probably is too modern though 😀

I guess its possible. Could be that one of their D-S designs sounds as good in an optimized implementation. But I'm fairly sure they have no new R2R/multibit DACs.

Based on my own listening I'd recommend my current 6*TDA1387 design. Its available as a kit or if you prefer I can supply it as a built and tested board. But I'm not selling completed (boxed) DACs so you would need a modicum of DIY skills to realize a complete DAC.
PhiDAC hex kits with pre-built filters

It turns out that MHDT do have an AD1862 DAC - the Atlantis. Priced at $826 in the basic incarnation.
Atlantis DAC
Thank you very much..
A bit expensive for what I plan to spend on a DAC..
I'll keep looking,
maybe more people have other options

Pay someone a reasonable price who can build it for you (check my thread, shared is everything). It can be completed outside the case - on a "wooden board" - you will pay only for components + fee for a little construction time. Then you test it and if you will like the sound, you can build it into a nice case. AD1862 is no longer commercially produced and everything (or most) that has been produced is not NOS.
Thank you for the idea, I might do it.
BTW, maybe you sell one of the older versions that you implemented?

Unfortunately there is not this version ...
The most critical part is DAC board itself - this can be built for you, by someone in the thread ... there are people who bought the original DAC chip from trusted supplier instead of ebay (new, unused).
Other modules you can buy ready-made (power supplies and transformer, USB-I2S card on your preference).

Looking at Sold listings on HifiShark, a used MHDT Atlantis sells regularly from $450-$650 (or more if they've stuffed it with expensive caps and other mods). If you put a WTB ad on Audiogon, Audiocircle, Head-fi, or other places, you'll probably get an email. If you're specifically looking for an 1862 based DAC (and not an 1865), a used Atlantis is probably the best quality😛rice you'll find.
