Is it Live or is it Memorex?

We found a singer... But we keep her name for us.

Actually, a (trained, with perfect pitch) singer can make the minute pitch adjustment to resonate something with a Q of 5000, on the fly. By hearing the subtle changes in reflected sound. Find the frequency, then hit it with energy. Crash tinkle tinkle tinkle. The tape would be stuck with the one frequency that was originally recorded, to within how well it can maintain 1-7/8 ips (for cassette). Change the temperature or humidity in the room and that frequency might not resonate the glass anymore. Better play it back right away. If the tape stretches, all bets are off because it could be off pitch enough with a sufficiently high Q system.

Complex harmonic structure would have very little to do with it - it’s the fundamental and maybe one dominant harmonic (and that’s probably 2, 3 or 4 if it has anything to do with it at all).

I'm pretty sure we'd have known if it was Memorex. The tape jams, hiss and lack of dynamic range would have given it away...

You can probably tell I hated tape, or at least the compact cassette. Also of course I was really really really afraid of killing music or having my house raided by the Recording Industry *** of America (as it was known in some circles).

I just rub my wet finger around the rim until it rings. That easily identifies the resonant frequency. If you do it while sitting at a piano, you know the note within seconds. You could also use a mic, record the ringing and then use a frequency generator with a big ol' whoop-*** amp and PA speakers.

Both of those lack the elegance of The Queen of Jazz though.
