Is full range what I'm looking for?

Wow that's cool!
I'll definitely go for the Alpair 10.3 M 🙂

Now it's time to choose the enclosure... I've read that the FHXL is the best one... but they're really BIG... and the Pensil are not so beautiful...

Has anyone tried the Alpair 10.3 on a bass reflex / onken enclosure? How's the bass on it? Acceptable?
I suppose that it won't be as good as in the FHXL... is the difference that big?

Tipex- I think the short answer to that would be "yes"

While I have a personal affection for the aesthetic of all 3 members of the FH family, I wouldn't exactly describe the Pensil as "not so beautiful" - pedestrian, perhaps.

There's another enclosure for the 10s which is not discussed much here -the MarKen10 compact floorstander - actually my own "daily driver" - shown here along side the FH3 and FHXL in the background.

If space permits, I would go with one of the larger enclosures. I've used the Alpair 10.3 and 10p in a variety of bass reflex designs with good success, my favorite being a 10.3 in something of an EBS alignment. The Alpairs can move a good bit more air then many full rangers and as such tend to provide a respectable bottom end in a well designed box.

Of course this all subjective.

With regards to your thread title (Is full range what I'm looking for?), only you can answer that. I for one enjoy both and prefer a well executed design rather than simply boiling it down to fullrange vs multiway. I've heard many great examples of both full range and multiway setups and all had their strengths and weaknesses. Your best bet would be to audition a few systems if possible and make your own conclusion.

If you want to go the full range route, perhaps pick a driver with a reputation for quality mids and highs. Smaller drivers will typically give better off axis performance, larger drivers will typically give a more authoritive bottom end and more "weight" to the presentation. If you are not satisfied with the bass response or the IM distortion becomes an issue, you can always add a subwoofer or pair of woofers which should address both situations.

The Alapir 10.3 or 7.3 would be my recommendations, not having much experience with the above mentioned Fostex drivers. The 10.3 is my favorite stand alone driver from Mark Audio. I prefer the Alpair 7.3 when bass support is used.

The Alpair 10p is a nice driver, but I personally prefer the metal version. To each their own.

Best of luck!
