Hi,
Has anyone found a way to have the iport Express output an audio signal through its USB port?
Thanks
Neil

If you are referring to the Airport Express, it only has an spdif optical output, unless you are willing to recase the thing, in which case, the internal DAC (and SPDIF output) is a TI PCM2705, which is a USB interface. You could rebox the thing, say, inside a hammond case, maybe wire the antenna to the back panel along with a USB jack.

Cetool,
Sorry Airport Express it is.
No problem with the reboxing. Any idea how to access the USB pins?

Neil,
Look at the following pictures, the first being of the bottom of the audio board, showing the connection to the mainboard, and the second being the mainboard, showing where the audio board plugs in. You would need to figure out which pins on that connector correspond with the necessary pins on the audio board, and tap them on the mainboard. If it wasnt for the fact that Apple, in their infinite wisdom, sonically welded this thing's case solid, I would just suggest cutting the connections to the printer USB jack, and wiring the USB traces to that port directly. You could still do that if you have no need for wireless printing, or use a panel mount jack on the new case.

You can't get USB out from PCM chips. Only USB in. The PCM 2705 has USB in and SPDIF out. But the real advantage of the Airport Express is getting bit-perfect transfer through wifi or ethernet. I've read the new Airport express (the 811n version) does not use the PCM chip
