Sure seems like an Ionovac tweeter.

Apparently this idea of improving combustion by controlling a flame's shape with electric fields has been kicking around for some time. Over 20 years ago, the folks at Sandia National Labs contacted Acoustat to purchase some of our high voltage ESL audio transformers for that very purpose. I never heard back from them on the experiment, but it seems like the idea is moving forward!
Not to mention "flame" or "dragon" speakers of various kinds rediscovered over the years, intentional or not.
Fun aside, maybe it is time to draw-in some of these latest ideas to make mass-less drivers.
Over in the multi-driver forum, I have been losing friends by talking about "waving heavy cardboard cones" to make sound. Dreadful primitive Rice-Kellogg concept - yet it is the modal way 100 years later today.

There are a few recent threads on Plasma speakers already, Pictures but not a lot of info.
I have most if not all of the stuff to build a working model, but I haven't had the time lately.
In fact I was just thinking about it this morning!!
I plan on building mine using FET's as they are cheaper.
I still have a few sweep tubes and a 6146 but not a matched pair of any type that are in good shape.
My multiples are in a pair of 300 and 500 watt RF linear amps and that is where those are going to stay.
I would like to build a three way system using the three technologies,Woofer, ESL midrange and a Plasma tweeter.
All of my time lately has been taken up in learning to program and working with Microcontrollers (MCU's).
I need to do that First so that I can control Digital Pot's and switches for my audio projects and desktop ESL preamp/crossover/amplifier unit.
Cheers!!!
