Interpreting input sensitivity and voltage gain?

21dB=20*log(V/V), thus V/V=10^(21/20)=11.220V/V

Just to clarify, is the DAC output figure in Vdc or Vrms? 1V peak is 0.707Vrms, but 1Vrms is 1.414V peak. That would change your gain requirements.

The ICEpower modules appear to be designed so that a 2Vrms signal (2.828V peak) would drive the output to the rail. I used to have an old (mid 80's) CD player that had 2Vrms line level outputs. I thought most newer equipment had ~1Vrms line level outputs.

That's interesting, I didn't know that, and makes sense then. The output from my DAC is 1Vrms. I considered getting a miniDSP U-DAC8, which had a 2Vrms output stage. But I scrapped that because that costs $295 and still didn't get me full output (now I know it does), and I didn't want to get another sound card just to get a line input when my current Asus Xonar U7 does that. The preamp is cheap and I get "extra" headroom (due to JRiver problems)

I don't know which ICEpower board you have, but some of them have ±12V aux power outputs. That would make things a bit easier.

EDIT: Ah, you mentioned it's the 50ASX2. That has ±25V aux outputs, so you would need to use regulators.

Hi fellows,
I am considering the 50ASX2-SE as my first diy project (as pop980 on ebay is temptingly cheap..). I've been concerned about exactly the matter of matching the components. I've already bought an Allo Boss dac (Allo.com - Boss DAC), which has 2.1Vrms output.

Am I correct this will feed the 50ASX2 nicely?
If so, can I be sure the dac can provide enough current, or is only the voltage of interest?
Did I understand it correct, that 50ASX2 has all needed protection built in, and I don't need another DC protection board?

I am considering getting a Promitheus TVC as I need at least 2 inputs, but that will have to be later on, if I surprise myself and manage to create a working power amp..

Thanks a lot🙂
