Yep, I can find in logs that some computer was infected and now being part of botnet tries to find on all Internet hosts that have open 80'th port known exploits, including exploits in software that analyzes logs?

What can I do then, except notify the owner of the site that he is no more the owner? Add his address in firewall rules? Such way I can block half of Internet from access to my site, and my firewall will crawl on the floor trying to implement all rules...

Don't patronize companies you disagree with their behavior. Better yet, go compete against them and do a more responsible job. It CAN be done. I have done a lot of procurement for software development. There are a lot of companies, mostly small, that really try and do the best for the customer. Good business is good business. In my circle, news travels fast. When a company miss-treats me, a lot of potential customers know. I don't do that to get even. No, I to that to help everyone know, doing a responsible job for the customer is rewarded with future opportunities. Business that do "good business" can grow and be more profitable. We don't expect every program to be successful. It happens in IT. The true mark of a business in any field is how they behave when it does not go well.

I suspect if we were not on opposite coasts, over a pint we would agree on far more than it looks like here.

A really good start. So many companies are afraid to let their people communicate externally. Keeping quiet is no way to fight this war. If they are not responsive, absolutely block. Let them know and why. Then your company has to pay the tax I was talking about so you can get a much faster firewall. Less profits, lower pay raises, less investment because of the vandals.

Of course, as that specific IP is a know Nigerian gateway.....

You may lough, but once I sent e-mail to owners of one respectable web commerce site in Finland notifying that their site is infected by botnet. Approximately month after I got an answer that my ticket is closed, and I have to fill their form about how well they served me.

I know what you mean. I've given up tying to point out errors and problem with websites.
Even tho very diplomatic and polite, I never get any response. The problems don't get fixed, either. What can you do?

Actually, it was not comment about their content; it was comment about their server bombarding other sites in Internet trying for known exploits. That means, their server was infected by malicious software. But instead of solving the problem and thanking me for valuable help (such infected sites automatically are blacklisted on many hosts in Internet) they sent me a link on their form that contains lots of question to answer how well they served me.

One Internet security professional complained, his router was dropping packets if they belonged to SSL session, other traffic went through flawlessly. Sounds weird, but when provider replaced his router the weird phenomenon dissappeared.
