Internal speaker wiring

I ussually use 12 guage speaker wire to connect speakers to my receiver. So, it would seem to make sense that I use wire at least that guage to wire the inside of a diy speaker. How important is the guage of wire used inside a speaker?

At least as important as the wire you use to connect it to the amplifier.

Doesn't make much sense to use expensive wire for the long run from the speaker to the amplifier, and then to cheap out on the short run inside the speaker.

To an extent, I'd agree, aside from thinking expensive wire is the biggest rip-off known to mankind. It's important, but what you use should also depend on what you're hoping to achieve, and what the rest of your system is like. I usually use a 24AWG twisted pair for internal wiring with FR drivers, for example. Adds a touch of series resistances, boosting Qe and proportionally lowering Qm. For more regular applications, 12AWG zip cord is fine.
