hi,
i saw class A amp ZEN-XA, 120w into 8ohms. anyone knows about this amp?
how is your comment on this amp sound qulaity? is there anymore web can see this amp ppls build?
http://www.kk-pcb.com/zen-xa.html
thank you

I say, you should have a look at what power supply you will need.
Also how much heatsinks?
Those 2 factors certainlyn will affect Sound Quality.
There are no 2 amplifiers, from same schematic, that is the same.
.. as there are no 2 transistors, or resistors, or transformers
or capcitors
... that are or can be 100 % same = perfectly match
regars 🙂

what is the heat sink size require for this amp?

This is a Nelson Pass amplifier.
He would be the best man to ask.
Hope he reads this. I Know he will 😎
Even if your topic should better be in 'Pass Labs' forum.
What I think is:
this is an Class A amplifier, with requirement Clean and powerful PSU.
And quite impessive heatsinking.
Lineup, me, and some other clever guys, usually put it like this:
A power amplifier can never be better
.. than it's power supply ( PSU )
Make this test:
connect an amplifier, without power supply
to your speakers.
What do you hear?
The power comes from Power supply.
Amplifier can not make any power, at all.
Which many forget about.
If power supply is Strong & Good= amplifier can put out strong & good power.
If PSU not strong .. amplifier can not put out strong power.
Simple isn't it!! 🙂
Power supply sets the LIMIT for good and strong output power.
Not the amplifier.
Amplifier can be a good or less good Power handler. Serve some power.
But if power to handle is not there, amplifier can not do much.
=================
To make an analogy.
The cook makes the food. In the back of restuarante.
The waiter carry, handle, the food to the restuarant customer at the table.
If there is no good food to deliver, the waiter (amplifier) can not give the customer some good food.
Regars, Lineup 🙂
Power dissipation?space2000 said:hi,

Wanted temperature of the heatsink?
The room temperature?
If you know those parameters you can calculate have many deg C/W you'll need in the heatsink.
I do not think this has Nelson's blessings. This company is making
money off these circute boards. I think this has been talked about
before this is not right to put it mildley. I am not positive this is a
Pass amp oh! the active Alph current source is stolen from Pas. But like this dude's Tube Zen amp it may not be a Pass amp -
This dude tacked a 6c33c on a zen Amp as an input buffer totaly
crazy!

hi peranders,
Power dissipation? =500w (as i have seen on the circuit)
Wanted temperature of the heatsink? = means highest temp of the heat sink? if it is then should not be more then 45c after get hot.
The room temperature? =here is 28c
thank you for helping me.
45-28 = 17C Rise for 500W = 0.034C/W
and that is without package or issolator derating.....
IT IS HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE

Hi Michael,
Given the conceptual simplicity, the distortion figures will be quite high. So, I guess that the 'sound quality' (whatever that may be) will be mediocre or just bad.
Besides, converting 500W of precious electricity into heat is a disgusting practice and shows evidence of a complete lack of ingenuity to make a decent amplifier.
Regards,
Edmond.
Hi,
even using 0.1C/W for each back of 6 FETs will not get the 4sinks within 17Cdegrees of ambient.
Hint:-
What's the de-rating factor for Delta s-a of 17Cdegress?

This amp...
...is "simply" a bridged Zen, it is not formally an X amplifier, ie it has no use of "super symmetry". AFAICT while clearly inspired by Nelsons work it's basically not one of his designs.
Used from a balanced source it will have quite different distortion characteristics than the regular Zen, perhaps numerically better, but still not great. Balanced Alephs would give better results, with almost no cost in additional components...
But by the time you've spent all the time effort and money on power mosfets, power supply and heatsinks you might be better off making the real AX-100, though you could also do that transition later.
Just my 2c
Stuart
PS There are at least 2 *major* typos in that schematic, I guarantee building it the way it's drawn will disappoint.
PPS IIRC Nelson indicated he was OK with Kristian selling the PCBs, since it encourages and enables diyers that cannot make PCBs.

hi mooly,
yes i just saw this so i was curious what is the reality, thats why i asked here in forum. anyway i know now that this is totally fake circuit just want to laught.....ha.....ha...
"mooly" i am still waiting for the parts to arive then will make yours amp.....can't wait to hear the sound....
thanks to all,
best regards
