LUMIÉRE DST
After a long silence I am posting another set of photos of an interesting cartridge. This is a Japanese version of the legendary Neumann DST phono cartridge. It is called Lumiére DST. According to my best knowledge its production has been ceased.
The quality unfortunately was not constant therefore there were some unsatisfied customers.
This example had been previously serviced by someone else but the result was not good.

cool. ive always wondered.
is the glob of glue suposed to be there from coil to the top of the cartrage.

Trying very hard to understand what moves??
Also what is the purpose of the vertical rod in what looks like epoxy (circle of transparent yellow stuff) - in picture 1, bottom row, post 3?
Did someone glue *everything*?? Is that what you mean by "not entirely satisfactory"??
Set up properly, does the coil wiggle by being attached to the cantilever, or is the cantilever supposed to bisect the coils - also where is the magnet??
Most unusual!

The magnet is below the "epoxy" which is actually not an epoxy but an elastic material. The vertical rod is supporting the cantilever and together with the "epoxy" it creates a suspension system for the cantilever.
The coils attached to the cantilever and vertical rod are moving in the magnetic field.
Unfortunately the glueing was done by the manufacturer itself. The coils are fine in this unit but it will need a new coil and a lot of work to rebuild this cartridge to make it sound as it should.

Sorry, I did not fully understand your question.

thanks for trying to understand my ramblings.
my question was kindof the same as bears and, has been answered.
very cool thanks again.
So, the circular thing with the post going up to the stylus (first drawing) is made of what??
Seems on the surface to be incredibly high mass and low compliance??
Think I'd prefer a Decca...

How well does this cartridge perform in practice? It certainly does not not fill me with a lot of confidence when I look at almost anything else in comparison.
What should be the advance of this design?
Neumann used this design and it certainly sounds different and in my opinion in a very good way. Neumann DSTs were used to listen back the masters on the lathe. Similar to SPU these sound fantastic on older records.

That thing (rod) is made of aluminium and supports the cantilever and functions as a suspension for it together with the dampening ring.
Certainly you can prefer a Decca but I would suggest to listen to this cartridge if you have the possibility 🙂

This particular piece is not the best. As I said it will need a lot of work to get the best out of it.
The original Neumann on the other hand is a piece of art and sounds fantastic.
ok, a few more questions if i may.
from the comments, this type of suspention isnt the normal way of doing it? i take that back normal sound bad. this isnt the common way a, say, denon mc dose it"
and you hint that this was poorly rebuilt, correct?
if so, what is poorly done? to much goop?
or somthing else?
i find this very cool thanks!
please please post the finished bad boy.
im so darn intrested im gunna start looking for one to get......as long as its not a million $

The DST is rare and expensive. Good ones go for obscene amounts of money. (North of $7K in Japan??) I guess the Lumiere One is considered to be a step up from that.
I've not heard one and don't expect to.. 🙁
