Inside the Box, or what I've been fixing this week.

Welcome to an occasional series where I'll post pics of stuff I've been servicing that has interesting features. It's not going to be a cloning guide for commercial boxes, but hopefully something to inspire something different or designs to experiment with.

So, to start we have the Nexo Alpha B1, a 15" low/mid box from a system that, though old, still has a reputation in the dance scene.

The first pic shows the trapezoidal box with the grill removed. It is a front horn loaded box, with the rear chamber vented via the port you can see on the RH side. Usable frequency response of this design is about 80-250Hz. The horn flare is made out out some sort of loaded fibreglass, very heavy and well damped.

Next up, the flare removed and the driver on display. Note the extremely awkward mounting, the bolts are hidden under the port and very tight to the back wall. One of the major tasks in this project is replacing all the t-nuts that have been crossthreaded due to the difficulty of getting the bolts lined up when replacing the drivers. Designers take note!

And the third and final photo, with the driver removed for testing. Of interest here is the manifold at the horn throat, producing a compression cavity to boost efficiency in the required bandwidth.
