I'm sure this has been discussed but can't find the thread.
I have two CD players but only one "CD" input on my pre-amp. Any way to create a simple switch which would connect the CD player that is playing to the pre-amp input and disconnect the other (silent) CD player? No gain is needed in the switch.
I've tried using a passive resistor-mixer. But it cuts the signal too much to work right with my loudness-control contour (the loudness-control contour has to track right with other inputs, of course) so the input level needs to be the same for all sources.
Or where to buy such a gizmo.
(Funny thing, if I had two Pioneer PD-F1007 carousel 300-disk changers, they would work as master and slave and do the switching internally. Unfortunately, I have a PD-F1007 and a PD-F1009 and the PD-F1009 doesn't work as a slave, unless somebody can advise me how to do it.)
Thanks.

go to esp and read up on the auto start and auto switch off of a Power amp.
It's all done at the input end using line level signals.
You can make a two channel version.

Andrew T - thanks for the suggestion of key words for searching better.
I found Rod Elliot has a nice little circuit for turning on subwoofer amps when the music starts. But as somebody suggested, this is the kind of project where one would rather buy a little ready-made module from a surplus parts dealer.
My requirement is slightly different than a simple AC power turn-on circuit with a slow turn-off function like Rod Elliot's. I need to switch between two audio circuits, depending on which has (more) signal and without turn-on or switching delay (even though music has lots of quiet parts).

Interesting take there on the sub. switch, bentoronto.
I think the principle of operation is the same, however, except that the switching or
relay action required is alternate (toggling) between the 2 sources, as you specify.
It would seem to me that you want a switch to throw when the music starts too.
You need to latch it the same way and allow that the switch is reversed when the
music starts in the other source. A sort of 2-input version.

Nice circuit, if a bit elaborate. That's Billy A. Gates, not the Billy H. Gates. who owned that Seattle software shop.
