Infocus projector - overheating?

I bought a used Infocus Litepro 550. It's a little old now, but I put in new bulbs and I get a decent image when I turn it on. However it always shuts off after about 3 to 5 minutes. Maybe it's overheating? Any ideas?

Sometimes when I turn it back on after it shuts off, the image is distorted. Don't know if this helps with the diagnosis.

Thanks for any help you have.

Thanks for your response. There is cold air coming out of the vent, but the area around the bulb itself gets really really hot. I don't think the cooling system is working very well. Do you think I should buy a computer fan for example, and try to install it somewhere near the bulb?

If you haven’t already, you could try cleaning the filter where the air gets sucked into the projector. If that filter is fine then you must have a blockage in one of the air passages. That is still assuming it is an overheating problem. The exhaust air should not be cold or even cool. Projector Central says that the L.P.550 uses a 400 watt halogen so at best it should be very warm air even to the point of your hand feeling uncomfortable having it blow air on it if you sick your hand right next to the exhaust for very long. The only other thing I could think of, if the air passages are all clear, is that there might be a second fan that blows air over the LCD. If there is, that fan might not be working since you said that the projector does blow some air so at least one fan is working.

All lcd projectors have a fan at the lcd blok to keep it cool, and there are one or more fans to keep the inside of the housing cool, specialy around the lightsource. The fan at the lcd block is a very small one. In most cases you have to disassemble the projector to reach this fan. Distorted picture is always caused by overheating of the lcds. In my current job I have about 80 lcd projectors running in a university department, they are running 8 hours a day.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
