First let me say hello to you all as I'm new here! I'm sure I'll enjoy it!
Anyway, I recently purchased on eBay a 12" subwoofer and DIY-built enclosure. It's a car sub, but built for home cinema purposes, and even though the cabinet isn't totally finished, it sounds rather good.
So the driver it's using is made by "SPLX" as far as I know, and all it says is "SPLX 1250" on the magnet. Can anyone provide any information about this speaker and/or manufacturer?
Here's a link to the auction with a photo, but I'm not sure how long the page will last:

Thanks
Howard

Update
Well my dad and I got to work on the cabinet today, sawing and sanding off all the imperfections, and filling in any gaps/leakages. We've got it primed and sitting out in the sun to dry. Hopefully tomorrow morning we can get the undercoat and top coat done, and it'll look lovely! 🙂

Welcome to the forum, Howard.
It sounds good, eh? Well that's the most important thing round here. Some of those car speakers can be very good buys indeed.
I don't personally know the SPLX 1250 and I couldn't find anything when I searched on Google. That's probably just the model number, not the manufacturer. If it works well in the cabinet that you've got for it, that's the main thing.
Good luck with the finishing. I hope you can make it look as good as it sounds. After you've put the final coat on, you could use T-cut on a cloth to get a really good finish.
Don't forget to take some photos when it's finished to post on the forum.

Hi.
Yeah it's in the garage at the moment with the primer drying.
Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera for photos, but I will try to lug it in here and use my webcam, although the pictures aren't fantastic. I've seen other SPLX subs on eBay so it could be the manufacturer.
After the undercoat and matt Black top coat, it should look pretty nice. It's gonna be passive, powered by my old Tandberg amplifier, which sounds fantastic with it, and there is no interference, humming or buzzing whatsoever.
I bought a banana plug terminal box to mount into it for a more professional result 😉
Oh btw, how many posts before my posts stop getting moderated, as I'm new? Lol

Sounds great. No hums and buzzes is always a good thing. What sort of crossover are you going to use?Howard said:It's gonna be passive, powered by my old Tandberg amplifier, which sounds fantastic with it, and there is no interference, humming or buzzing whatsoever.

I'm not sure about the moderating thing. What I do know is that you can learn a lot about speaker design by reading the posts on this forum. There are some very knowledgeable and clever people about. Just read whatever topics grab your interest and take it from there. It probably won't take you so long to start being an expert yourself. Good luck with it.
Steve
PS: Building speakers is really the best way to learn. Pick up some inexpensive drivers and start to experiment. Loads of fun.
Yeah about half an hour ago I finished reading through all 81 odd pages of the Loudspeaker forum 🙂
I don't plan on using a crossover? My receiver only outputs low frequency, and I don't wanna put any more strain on this amp.
Today has been fun building up the cabinet and making sure it's perfect, no leaks, etc. Can't wait till it's finished! 🙂

Howard:
I did a search on the Copernic search engine for the SPLX 1250. All I got was a dead link to a place in Ireland that sold them, (or used to sell them), and a thread on Audio Asylum where several people were asking each other if they had any information on the SPLX 1250 sub. Nobody had.
Oh, well. Good luck. From the pictures you posted on the other threads, it looks a good solid sub. 🙂

Assuming you're not a dipstick, which you don't seem to be at all, you'll be a free man before you know it. Welcome to diyAudio!

I'm scratching my head trying to see how a friendly and casual welcome can be read as something rude. Seriously, could you enlighten me? I will NOT take offense.

you could have said :
Welcome to the form. A good way to be welcomed and not moderated is to not swear and read the rules. And be kind..

Hehe 🙂 Don't worry, I wasn't offended, quite the opposite infact 😉
Anyway to answer your question whoever asked it, my receiver (Sherwood RD6118) has a subwoofer preout that only outputs low frequencies, so no need for a crossover!

I see your point Jason but must admit I think SY's approach also had a lot going for it. Nothing wrong with a bit of well-worded humour.JasonL said:Welcome to the form. A good way to be welcomed and not moderated is to not swear and read the rules. And be kind..
The 'be kind' bit was new though - reminds me of Hill St Blues "Hey let's be careful out there". And you're right. Kindness is important on a forum like this. Many people, particularly newbies, really put themselves out there with their design and craftmanship. They need encouragement and positive suggestions and we mustn't be over-critical. Save the knives for when they've got one or two designs behind them.

Hehe I know your probably thinking my design is rubbish!
But watch your mouth if I ever design a few more speakers 😉...Remember I am just south of London too 😉
j/k
Whereabouts south of London do you live?

No I don't actually. Let me hear it first. Then I can think it's rubbish. (just kidding).Howard said:Hehe I know your probably thinking my design is rubbish!

Oxted, Surrey - near J6 of M25.
Hmm...Not far from here...I'm near Woking in Surrey, small world. Lol.
My sub probably doesn't sound as good as the proper expensive ones, and the DIY ones you guys take months building, but I like it. And it looks nice unlike the boring boxes many are designed like! 🙂
I don't really know how to compare it to any others; how are they "supposed" to sound? It's difficult to describe it's output!
