Infinity RS IIA

I got a pair of Infinity RS IIA (two 10 inch woofers, three EMIMs and three EMITs per channel),speakers on the way and had a chat with a high end shop owner who says they will require a high current amp (not necessarily high power?) and that my BK st-140 won't cut it for them...I suggested that maybe getting another st 140 and either using them as mono amps or bi-wiring...My question to you folks is will it be worth it to do this with these speaks or something else...My pre-amp is Audible Illusions Modulus IIc

Please forgive my ignorance but I think you high end friend was referring to the fact that some Infinity speakers have a tendency to dip well below 3 ohms, at times nearly 1 ohm.Should your amplifier not be able to handle nearly dc current, regardless of the power, your amp is going to get VERY HOT !.
I know because I had Infinity Kappa 8's, known as amp klllers. I found peace when I ran them connected to a 500w/ch McIntosh 2500 with PowerGuard. The amp circuitry cuts power whenever there's clipping going on to protect itself.
I've read it's solvable by cutting several cables in the crossover, clearly admittedly WAY above my expertise.
VERY NICE speakers by the way, change your amps, not your speakers. They're worth their weight in gold.

A good solid 2Ω stable amp will work. Beyond that there are a multitude of ways depending on complexity. Biwire/active/passive mix, all active etc, like driving each woofer with it's own dedicated amp, where you won't have low impedance issues. Lots of choices and decisions to make.

Some of my favorites from back in the day. Including the love of AMT's, which are part of my current build 🙂

I know the vintage Threshold amps like the original 300, 500 as well as Series II versions can easily handle that load, with power to spare.
I have also had good results with modified Hafler DH200/220 amps.
Ran a modified DH200 on Kappa 8s, 9s and Deltas for quite awhile.
The reworked Haflers are nice sounding amps, but don't have the raw power of the larger Threshold amps.

They have arrived in good shape and are presently hooked up to my BK st-140...The amp runs hot at medium listening levels though rather captivating in my modest man cave...got a CONRAD JOHNSON SA-250 SONOGRAPHE on the way that may be more suitable for these speaks as they apparently a high current amp...will see how that works out and go from there...low power transistor amp standoff coming soon (less than 200watts)...the amps talked about here seem to be way more suited for concert hall
applications rather than basement suits

If you want a cheap amp that can drive them, I bet a Hafler XL280 can do the job. I used one for a year to power my acoustat 2+2's and it did it quite easily, never getting too warm and these speakers can dip easily into 2 ohm range plus, are inefficient.
They can can be found for around $150- $200 on ebay. I got mine for around $130, nice, cheap, durable amp.
I don't think there is a better or cheaper 2ohm stable /140w+ amp around that can be commonly found used for under $200.
