Infinity Qa Crossover service

Hi all. I have a pair of infinity Qa's that I've had for a couple years now. The tweeters have slowly been going out over the last few months and whenever I'd turn up the volume past a couple watts, the tweeter would essentially click back into place. It was mainly only one of them that did this, the other one was relatively fine, though I had notice it just beginning to have problems as well.

I thought it was the tweeter gain know on the back having some dust in it and needing deoxit, as suggested by someone on here, and I have the caps ready to be replaced too, but hadn't gotten to it. I ended up taking the speakers a state over this last weekend to my cousin's and once I got there and hooked em up, the other tweeter that had been working fine was a no go. Couldn't get anything from it, and the other side is still going in and out. Now I'm assuming that a loose connection was broken free from the good jostling they got on the way down, but a fear in the back of my head is that because I had the windows down and the speakers were in the backseat, that the 80mph highway winds came into the car and damaged what I'm assuming is a fairly fragile ribbon inside the tweeter. Not sure how feasible this is.

Regardless of what the issue is, I need to bust open the speaker to fix any of this, but the issue is I can't figure out what the best way in is. Unscrewing the woofer? I've seen pictures of the crossover pulled out, but can't seem to figure out how anyone would do that, there's no screws on the back. I'm assuming going through the woofer is the best way, but was worried of breaking a seal or something. Though typing it out now is making me feel like that's silly. Well I'm gonna go bust it open now, but if anyone has any suggestions, they'd be well appreciated!!! 🙂

It's not a rocket science crossover. 😀

AFAIK, there's a fuse and potentiometer on the back panel. It's an "emit" magnetodynamic planar tweeter, and it's hard to guess how fragile it is. You certainly don't blow on ribbons, but this is slightly different.

I can't imagine getting the woofer out is hard. You might find a slightly sticky gasket, but those usually come off. If you are very lucky, the potentiometer might be rusty or corroded, or the fuse needs a clean, or a dry solder joint somewhere. I always keep my fingers between a screwdriver and a driver unit when unscrewing them. Very easy for the screwdriver to slip and pierce the cone!
