Infineon Tech acquire GaN Tech (new direction for their Class-D production)?

You put a web link in and then a quote after it which does not appear in the page you linked. That's bad etiquette before we even start on the fact that Infineon clearly view audio as a low volume market compared to the other areas they are targetting. Just pointing it out.

There, they have a case study on Orchard Audio's GAN class-D amps.
As said they are half as powerful in watts as the the others atm, being only 250W@8ohm but still doubling to 500w@4ohm, early days yet bet that those figures grow in the future

My favorite thing here is that Infineon did this with all cash.
US$830 million!!! who has that kind of spare change hanging around. :spin:

Cheers George

Class D. See here for some implementation details and they have links to AP measurements on the product pages.
especially useful in high-frequency and high-power applications, like in audio power amplifiers.

Calling audio Class-D audio amplifiers "high-frequency" switching, is rather cute. 😀

It's also not really high power, well yeah maybe for 4-10kW pro amplifiers.
This is also where those things make a bit more sense, because even at 90-95% efficiency with MOSFETs that's still quite a lot of heat dissipation.
