Sushil Anand at Nova Audio has a few or atleast ahd a few last thime I visited him. None were for $100 though.

Just called him - he said entry-level is Project Debut III for Rs17,000 and then he has models going up over 1,00,000.
:hot:

I'm sure there must be *someone* who sells the cheap stuff ? :bawling:

Cheap is relative - however, there is ample supply in the Rs.10k-20k range in the pre-owned audio markets in Chennai, mostly imported from Singapore. You should be able to get many of the mid-level Technics direct-drive units from the '80s-'90s there.

I may also be willing to sell my Technics direct-drive turntable if the price is right - I don't remember the exact model number right now because the unit is in Chennai, but it's a late-80s, early-90s North-American, 110V model and the first 3 letters are SLQ. It's in excellent working condition, but will require a new turntable mat (the old one got warped due to the extreme summer heat in Chennai).

The sub-Rs.4k units are mostly refurbished idler-drive or belt-drive units from the 60s-80s - mostly Garrard, Philips, and the like. I don't think idler- or belt-drive is even an option for Hi-Fi today - they were the only types available in India in the 70s, so the Indian consumer accepted them due to lack of choice.

I don't think you'll find a direct-drive unit below Rs.10k these days - the DJs/VJs have generally caught on that these units are durable even when the turntable is back-spun (reverse-stroked) while running, and supply of the better brands is somewhat limited.

Regarding new direct-drive units, the odds of getting anything other than a Technics is very low, and a new SL-1200/1210 Technics is probably in the region of Rs.25k+.

Thanks for the offer linuxguru. Navin, was that humour or sarcasm ?

neither. my local kabadi walla once (some time last year) had a Dual CS5000 for sale and only a few weeks ago I saw a Denon DP23 in his shop.

He told me he once had a batch of 4 Technics 1200 DJ tables for sale apparently some DJ dumped tables in favour of CD and ipods.

6 inch Bolton Full Range

Dear DIY Indian friends

Do anybody have the T/S parameters of Bolton 6 inch full range speaker. It uses a white paper cone. I don’t have any access to this driver, since I am away from India. It will be highly appreciated if some one can help me.

Thanks and Regards

Renjish

Navin, could you let me know the location of this raddiwalla ?
I'm quite surprised - so far I've only seen absolute junk with these guys.

I always thought people don't throw things away until they are absolutely irrecoverably beyond repair... and even then they keep it in a store room for 10 years first - just in case. 😛

Kalpana Old Paper MArt near Mahalaxmi Temple on Warden Road.
He gets stuff from expats moving back home. He is a bit of slimeball and a smooth talker so be warned.

In Mumbai we have no room for store rooms. Thanks to the insane real estate prices (a 1500 sq. ft. 2 BHK apt is selling for $ 2 million in our neighbourhood) store rooms are non existant.

Re: Toroidal transformers in India

I contacted Plitron, but they recommended that I get in touch with their Indian partner Salzer who are in Coimbatore and also manufacture on behalf of Plitron to Plitron's specs.

Navin, I just checked the salzergroup Website. They claim they also make audio output transformers. Since ssmith has had very good response from them for toroidal power xfmr in small quantities, maybe you can check them out for OPT? In fact even Miracle's Website seems to talk about audio transformers.

I contacted miracle and they never got back to me... I guess in their form where I put quantity=2, annual quantity=2 turned them off.
Haven't they given an email address? I've written email to them, and they've always responded. I think phone calls work well too. And qty of 2 haven't put them off in the past. I'd suspect their Web contact form's reliability more than their quantity issues.

I think you misunderstood the product details.
Miracle's audio transformer is a line level distribution transformer.
Typically 70 V or 100V . I wouldn't expect this to come up to hi-fi specs and it wasn't meant to be in the first place. You could try them out of course ! Better check the impedance matching ( turns ratio ) before you order.

Ashok, I'm confused. If its a line level transformer why would it have a rating of 30-60 watts ?
I can't imaging a line level transformer needing to handle more than a few milliwatts ?
What am I missing ?

p.s. If its too much to explain in a post please suggest some place I can read up on this.

Say you have a 30 watt amp and want to connect it to a 4 ohm speaker 100 feet away. You would need some pretty low resistance wire to do that. Instead you raise the voltage to say 70 volts from a typical 11 volts ( for 30 watts into 4 ohms ) and use a similar transformer at the speaker to drop it down to the correct level. That would mean the 4 ohm speaker will look like it's about 160 ohms ( turns ratio squared x 4 ohms ) and so you can use some reasonable guage of wire and have low line losses.
The transformer has a power rating because it is transfering that amount of power through it .
Is that OK ?
