The infamous Sony root kit has caused many of my CDs to become unplayable in some CD players. I had one car stereo head that simply refused to play them. ANY of them.
I had a Sony CD player in my car. Of course it played them just fine.
In the mid 90's I got one of the first 44/16 sound cards, a Pro Audio Spectrum 16. It required a SCSI CD rom drive for reading and writing CD's. It seemed to have no problem copying all of my CD's to the hard drive, then making copies, or compilations from the WAV files on my PC. I have no idea if the Sony virus ever infected any of my Windows 3.something PC's or not, but I never noticed any erratic behavior, or saw any warnings from the Norton AV of the day.
At the time it was beginning to become obvious to people like me who had a black car and lived in South Florida that a new store bought CD could live anywhere from 2 to 5 years in a hot car. Paint from the graphics on the top would leach through the thin coating and attack the aluminum layer causing drop outs and eventual failure. I made copies of the originals and kept the originals boxed up in the house to be legal. The early copy CD's only lived for a year or so in the car, but I have some that are about 10 years old now that play fine.
I still have every CD that I have ever bought (about 800 at last count) in boxes in the basement......many have only been "played" once.
