In search of vintage midrange duties...

Hi, In a previous set up I used Altec 420a as midrange drivers and really enjoyed them. I sadly had to sell that system a couple years ago, I am now in search of a midrange driver with some of the same smooth qualities but at a less expensive in price. Are there any such units you would recommend using between an Altec 416-8a and an Emilar EA-175/EH800 combo? Vintage paper cones with alnico motors are very appealing to me.

Thanks for looking

If you intend to go the cheap skate route without sacrificing real audio qualities, go the german radio route. Look for a very old Mende, Saba or Reichsrundfunkgesellschaftsradiokorporationsbetrieb radio. They have the speakers employed you are searching for. But its a sakrileg to demolish those just for the sake of using the speakers elsewhere. You can look at RFT Rundfunkkombinat speakers with alnico, too.

Jensen P15-LL
Can be bought for sub $200/ea. They go comfortably up to 2kHz range, so they make great two way spkrs. 99db and alnico.

The "catch" is that its hard to find matching pairs. These were mostly used in Leslie Organ Speakers and so, they are mostly sold as individuals. But if your not in a hurry, they come up often on ebay and come with date codes and other numbers to help w matching.

Schmitz, I don’t have the heart to make sacrifices like that but, I certainly will do a search to see what comes up.
Ogie, (my old nickname by the way 🙂 ), although I’m only interested in a driver to be utilized as dedicated midrange in a 3-way, I will do some research on your recommendation. I should mention, the driver does not have be of the 15” variety. I’m okay with any size as long as it can output enough to blend with the other drivers.
Thank you both for your contribution, I certainly do appreciate any and all suggestions.
