Improving on the LCY uniform dispersion ribbon

i dont have a picture of the backplate itself, but its not much but a flat plate with a hole it in and some foam with a grill over the hole.

i have listen to it with the face plate off, but this was not with the original ribbon element..

My LCY ribbons arrived... I took some pics and decided to post a few specs

the gap doesn't seem to be anywhere near 1 T... It just wasn't very strong and didn't pull my tools into it...


couple of noteable things

the effective ribbon is 1.5" long x .75" wide...

there is a 45 degree angle into the ribbon in the steel, for either edge diffraction or to minimize stray magnetic fields...... probably the latter...


the magnets seem rather small but possibly could be quite deep...

the ribbon is not slit... it is simply painted to look slit ..... it is a single piece of alluminum from what I could see (maybe my eyes are bad) but the top and bottom portions are one piece...

I attached a pic of the back of the faceplate... the face plate is flat steel... the only strange part is the concave face but that's just for looks it seems...

as simple 1/4 round circle of oak/ anything would do the same thing

it's a very simple design... easily replicated... so now I can return my ribbons

lol..yeah, your eyes are bad. the ribbons ARE slit, but not into two completely separate ribbons (but will still act the same as two separate ribbons where it matters most, away from the mounting locations)

^if you LIGHTLY blow into the ribbon cavity, you can see the ribbon elements moving separately...

you should give them a try before you return them.. if you like ribbons, youll like these!

^btw, the faceplate is made from aluminum.

the sound change dramatically for the worst, with household aluminum. maybe i shouldve tried slitting my household aluminum ribbons.. either way, i changed back to the OEM ribbon element and its back to normal (which i feel is better then any other conventional tweeter ive heard)...

you should give them a try before you return them.. if you like ribbons, youll like these!

without the faceplate the sound was worse... though simply likely due to edge refractions though... and it was minor to my ears

I will definitely slit the ribbons I make...

I see now that they are slit.... I did some listening this afternoon... quite nice... the slit is 1/8th of an inch from the top and bottom (this is where it ends)
 
why the slit?

The slit allows for independent movement of each ribbon. The BL force is the weakest in the middle. With the slit the sides will move more than the center. I always thought that the reason for pleating was to have the foil move as one.

Does this help dispersion? The slit is very clever if it improves the performance.

The house hold foil I have in a ribbon is .0006"(15.2 micron). The LCY is 6 micron(.006 mm), on the supertweeter at least. That may cause some of the sound differences as well as the change in resistance of the foil.

that ribbon would do several things... mainly throw off the stock transformer (which is probably where the bad sound originated from)

also it would make it massively less efficent... which would cause it to "sound" less dynamic
