Improving Freeview radio ?

Hi,
just had the chance to compare my FM radio sound to freeview radio.

The very cheap digital decoder (£40) cannot match the quality of the Quad FM4 even though the FM signal is distributed around the country as companded (lossless compression) 14bit.

Is there any way to improve the sound quality of the DAC and analogue output of the digital decoder? No details yet, just probing the feasibility.
Is the compressed digital signal from DAB so poor that improvement will not bring any gains?

One thing I do like is the very low frequency available from freeview both in TV and radio. I have never heard an FM radio go as low. That carrot might make the improvement I am looking for worthwhile.
