I have the chance of purchasing a Grace headshell, but was wondering, how important is the headshell to the quality of the sound? Cheers...
More background please, arm/cartridge/table? Budget?
My own experience with fairly high mass 12" transcription arms like the Schick, SME3012 as well as the more modest SME 3009 Series II with low to moderate compliance cartridges indicates it's quite important.
I like the Audio Technica Technihard head shells that come in several different masses in order to get the effective mass into the right range for a specific cartridge on a specific arm.
I've found more rigid head shells made with denser aluminum to be preferable. Ortofon and AT both make some nice and reasonably priced shells. Then there are Japanese exotics in wood and metal, and Thomas Schick's (amongst others) graphite shell.

I have a Rotel RP2300 TT, with stock Rotel arm and headshell, with a Grace F8c cartridge(recently resurrected after many years in retirement). Planning to upgrade the TT, and want to do a vintage TT restoration, and just feeling out a few potential upgrades. Silly I know to get stuff before I know what TT i'll end up with, but sometimes you can't help the timing of potential bargains! Looking at a CEC BD7000 TT at the moment for restoration. My budget for TT and upgrades etc would be in the range of $500 to $1000 over time, more if the bug really catches on again, which it probably will!
