Implementing ESS 9018 chip

Hello all,

Been considering purchasing the Oppo 105 for a few months. Really wanted to get the best DAC available in the Sabre ESS 9018 into my system, but paying 1,500 to do so was hard for me to justify given that I don't play DVD's and the DAC from the great Oppo design is the only aspect I wanted.

Searching ebay the other day I came across the ESS 9018 at a price that I couldn't turn down. Was surprised the superior chip was available at such a low cost. So I purchased it, knowing I was unsure on how to get it into my system.

Been thinking of the different methods I can do to use the chip. Swapping out a DAC in another piece of equipment, getting a PCB board, Raspberry Pi, etc. Early in thought process.

How would you implement the chip in your system?

One area that continuously seems to be an issue is the lack of HDMI inputs/outputs on nearly all components designed to run between cpu & AVR. No matter the quality of toshlink/optical I try it never comes remotely close to the sound quality of HDMI and also requires more amplification in my experience, playing at a lower volume level. Sometimes the variance is slight, other times it's significant, every time it cannot hold up to HDMI.

May I please get some recommendations on how to add the DAC chip to go between my cpu & AVR?

Really appreciate any assistance
