As I usually have more than one project going on at one time, I am looking into another experimental project, "The Voigt Pipe".
For those of you who know the point behind these, they are best utilized with a single fullrange driver. The ones I am looking for is the Fostex FE166e fullrange drivers. These seem to be the next best thing to the Lowthers at a fraction of the cost, and since this is experimental, I don't want to put a lot of cash into it.
So here's my question to all of you....
What other places are there that sell this driver for less than Madasound? They are selling it for $61.05 each which is not that bad. I will spend that much if I have to, however, if I can find them a little cheaper, that would be nice.
Actually, if anyone here has a pair new, used, and or similar, I might be interested. I want at least a 6.5" driver to get some decent bass extension.
Let's see what we can come up with!! 😀

Question: are Fostex fullrange drivers the best thing to Lowthers or are FE166e ?
I ask because i would like to try a simple fullrange open baffle speaker with a fostex and think about which one would be best. Isn't 200 mm better here than 160? (In case there is no additional speaker for low frequency reproduction)
edit: size should be 153*153 cm
True, a 200mm driver is better for bass extension, however, I would only be using these for orchestra music and jazz, and maybe some light organ music. Ah heck, actually, I would probably play everything through them, but the 160mm drivers are less expensive and that is my main goal as of right now.
Besides, with the smaller, lighter driver, the top end will probably be a little more extended. And this system is going to be strictly 2-channel using an old, (1978), Technics SU-8099 integrated amp rated at 100 watts per channel from 5Hz-100KHz and a Teac 5 disk changer that I have sitting around. Eventhough it is overkill for the Fostex drivers, this amp has always had an excellent, transparent sound with the ability to completely bypass the tone controls.

Fostexs are a much less expensive (in most cases) alternate to Lowthers. Fostex is the "high-end" arm of Foster and produce some darling's. As with any driver implentation plays a key role, and some of the Fostex with the right marriage sound real fine. Lowthers seem much more tempermental -- it will be interesting to see the results of Martin King's DX2/3/4 experiment, which was proceeded by Fostex 164 and 208 Sigma designs.

It is a trade-off between lows & highs -- the 8" Fostex are very often used with helper tweeter, the 4" units need helper bass, the 6" units seem to be the best compromise if you aren't adding any help.
BTW you will probably find Madisound pricing to be about the best around.

With that source you might well want a slightly soft top end.

That's what I thought as well and is the reason for using that Technics amp. Also, I will be using some homemade 0.5m interconnects. Not sure about speaker cables yet though.
I've been looking on the internet for over an hour now for Fostex retailers other than Madasound. Are there any others out there that sell them or is Madasound the only one?
After some more consideration, I believe my best choice for a full-range driver will be the Fostex FE206e. It has been said that eventhough it is not their most expensive 8" driver, it is their best sounding one. And I figure if I'm going to build these, I might as well go with the driver that is going to give me the most for my money.

Hmmm... i have heard good things about them, but i doubt there is a clear best driver... mind you i haven't heard any comments yet on the FA200 (Alnico). The FX200 gets good press, and if i was getting an 8 based on other comments would consider the FA200. The one i'd really like to get my hands on is a quad of FE168ES.

Well, either way, the FE206e driver will give me a little more bass extension and a slightly softer top-end. Right now, I have to just do some more "studying" to find out all the details before I even think about getting started.
However, I think I am going to order the Fostex in a week or so. You can't have enough extra drivers laying around, you know! 😉

The moving mass coil of the FE166E, is three time less than the FE206E, in despite of a soft bass response, the general sound of the FE166E is better than FE206E.
