Perhaps they are, one thing is beyo Yeah, and the 3 cylinder turbo crap motors. 😊
Yup, definitly ! Viva the non turbo 4 cylinders à la Mazda !
... and have you ever seen a Manger driver in a car whatever it is a Bugatti or a Citroen 2 CV ?
If needing something flat and bigger Sd a Neo10, for less than a Manger (but unfornatully not as round) I would lurk at this for a DIY : http://www.eraudio.com.au/505_Mini_Panels/505_mini_panels.html - Unfornatully they =greatly increase their cost like everything in Australia... which means a near economic crisis coming there alas !
sh!t I’m like that with everything.Problem is I've never been satisfied with anything off the shelf.
With speakers (even my own custom design’s), if I ever get a design going that I think is better than “acceptable” - then I’m pretty sure I’ll have to put it into production.

l also get worn-out and p!ssed-off with tools that have one function yet can’t seem to always work properly even with good care and maintenance. It’s that: “Jesus, you’ve got ONE JOB!” situation, and it happens a LOT. 😱😡
Really, life shouldn’t be as difficult as it often is.
It might be one of the reasons why Overkill Audio didn’t last very long.Manger systems are breaking down a lot, that is true.
Well, you know it. When it's (sweat) free, you're the product.
Believe it or not, I am trying yet to get true spl measurement from REW or Arta with my external SPL meter I purchased at Lidl ( sorta of local Walmart).

These drivers fail with age, because the damping piece in the center detoriates. It just turns in some kind of gunky dust and will block the voice coil.
All the materials used in this driver have a purpose and directly influence the response. So they took what worked and did not ask how long it would last.
I hope today they use better, longer lasting materials for the "puck" in the middle.
Miss Manger will talk for hours about the sound, why the bending foil is superior to anything else, but is very thight lipped about any technical details.
They are basically a flat version of the Ohm/ Walsh Loudspeaker. I never heard one, but some are fanatic about them, while other describe them as a bit boring.
They don't sell DIYS any more, what I understand. With it's tiny inner construction, while looking like a beefy woofer form the outside, they can burn up during a simple full range frequency sweep. A hobbyist doing so will sure complain and be quite unhappy when charged for the repair of the burned chassis.
There are too many that connect any new speaker to some amp, outside a cabinet "just for a short try". You don't hear the low frequency content that instandly burns them. Something that ruins your reputation in the new times of social media.

Well I heard back from Manger. The owner Daniela herself wrote me back.
They want about €430 a piece to rebuild if the VC is bad. That's not even guaranteeing a matched pair after the rebuild. There is also an upgrade to the newer magnet system, which roughly costs an additional €530. Needless to say its not worth it. These drivers sound good, but not €860 good.
For that money I can get a mint used pair of Tannoy 12" coax drivers from some Monitor Golds that will eat up the Mangers in every aspect and I don't have to put my head in a vise to get top end out of them. If they're good enough for Bernie Grundman, they're good enough for me. If the Mangers were that good, more people would be using them. I miss my Zerobox 109s, but they weren't any better than the Tannoys IMO.
If a driver is that fragile, that it fails after one low voltage sine wave sweep while being well within xmax, that is not acceptable IMO. I've tested tweeters which are more durable than this and have never had any issue with a failure of any kind for that matter.
What a disappointing experience. I love German engineering, but I don't like a product that is this fragile. I'm German myself, so its not like I'm being unfair saying this. I almost sold this MSW pair for decent money, but I would have lost my shirt twice through the refund I would have had to make if someone got them and had the same experience.
What a sad outcome. I expected more from Manger given the circumstances. I would have understood somewhat if I got some use from the drivers before one failed, but this was on a brand new pair of drivers stored very carefully in the original box. I own speakers older than this which held up better over time. I still even like drivers with foam surrounds if they're designed correctly and I have no issues occasionally.replacing surrounds, but this is a different situation.

I would write the pair off as useless. I would not resell them. Instead I would send them back to Manger with a note that perhaps they may be of use to someone else but not for you.
Yes a bit of a write off, but a reasonable insult. You might also help someone else who also has one bad one. Of course the manufacturer might examine the damaged one and learn something!

'Sounds' like a so many otherwise ~worthless cheap speakers I used for skeet practice! 🙁 Send a video of that to her for a 'reasonable' 'back atcha' insult. Sheesh!

Sensible to do but only helps the manufacturer. They already have my money from when I purchased these paper weights. If they would have any bit of understanding this was a brand new pair of drivers, they would have done something, even just take some cost off the repair. This is a good example of excess pride in one's product, not admitting there are problems and faults. Its also traditionally arrogant for old school Germans (I speak from experience having lived in the culture for most of my life and dealt with the holier than thou attitude of their engineers). We Germans can make beautifully and elegantly engineered things but can't hear it when things don't work as expected or fail due to our own mistakes.
As an example, I wouldn't ever own a.German car as they are notoriously expensive and complicated to work on due to over engineering. The other issue is what VW did with their diesel powered cars. They lied through their teeth several times before they were caught cheating the emissions test. Thats embarrassing to say the least and traditionally a German thing to do.

Oh come now! You're being too hard on our German friends. I'm not being an apologist for VW, but these defeat devices have (unfortunately) been around for half a century. Many of the car manufacturers have all done it-

It's this "don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness" mentality of corporate culture.
Let's not talk about the tactics of the American companies like Facebook (now Meta), or Microsoft or Google...

Pretty sure they will get the insult by you basically telling them their product is worthless!
As to our German friends, let me show you a family tree…

Whew. It's not just me. Yes, every freaking category has overpriced junk somewhere in it. How many times have we bought something knowing that it is likely that we will either have to take it back for refund or beef it up ourselves (if it is even possible)? Even some of my top dollar tools are not as reliable as some old tried and true product. This topic can be never ending. All we wanted was quality/performance. We were even willing to pay the extra for it. Reminds me of my first marriage.
The Manger patent has long expired, even as I never saw anything really worth a patent anyway. The fact that no one builds a copy, shows there is nothing but some hard core fans of them. The prices are simply rediculous. RIP.
I've been a Manger user since the early 90s and thought their technology would go somewhere. In the world of high tech cone /piston drivers, material science really took off and rendered bending wave transducers a thing read about in paper dictionaries. We have some amazing drivers to choose from these days. Manger probably needs to recoup as much as possible from their financial investment. I wont be contributing to that anymore.

I'd choose a German car anytime anywhere, I'd just need to pay a visit a 3 dozen junkyards (museum perhaps) and gather parts to rebuild an automobile of the 80's, perhaps MB 190 Evo2 or BMW E30 M3. I can't go buy groceries in a modern baloon like vehicles that you can't see from inside where the chassis starts and where it ends. 🙂
So true. When I was a kid, all car reviews thoroughly covered blind angles and generally field of vision. Today they almost never mention it, and its hard to see anything from most drivers seats.
About the Mangers I wonder if you could be lucky to find a voice coil that fits from a cheaper driver. -Then just buy up broken ones and make a business 😄.
There are some here on the forum who designs drivers from scratch and knows parts producers.
Cheers!

Buy some gasoline. Turn on the camera and say what you mean about Manger customer service and repair cost. Pour some gasoline on it and throw a burning match, watch them burn while whistling melody from REM's - The One i Love. Enjoy the flames for a couple of minutes. Then upload the video on youtube with some catchy name like BEST MANGER REVIEW - LET THE BUYER BEWARE.
Now that's what i call a proper buyer warning
