Well, I'm back in the game again... after many months and frying 3 small lcd's I have got myself a gem of a monitor to use.
I found a NEC 1550v to use for my newest diy project.
This monitor IS very diy-able. No need for ffc extensions at all just a single piece of wire soldered to the 2 boards as a ground.
I will post disassembly pictures later tonight likely.
The monitor's specs are as follows:
15"
1024*768 native
analog input
16,194,277 colors
16 ms response time
300:1 contrast ratio
.30 mm dot pitch
All in all for $100 cdn and a 45 minute drive this thing rocks!
Here's 2 pics of the monitor

awesome. looking foward to your work log. I have yet another 7" LCD and I'm thinking maybe I'll build....yet another one... for no reason. Already have 2 that are more then perfect...
I was thinking about (since its only 7") using multiple OHP lights. and no fresnels. I'll do a few tests to see if this is possible.

i just bought a nec 1530v monitor on ebay. (won't get if for another week)
can you please tell me what you mean by the one wire ground wire soldered to the board.
do you mean you have to solder it? or it comes that way and it's an obstacle?
i need to know what to do since i ruined 2 lcd's myself. (one was my fault)

i was just wondering im not in a hurry my sharp 1800 will work fine for awhile and im still waiting on the ballast.
that's cool. i can't wait to get started.
my last final is thursday, so i can start getting the local parts... (MDF, wiring, etc.) then by wednesday next week i should have monitor...................... maybe i can have it done before i travel for christmas, but more likely, i'll finish it when i get back....
one thing is for sure, i can't afford to break another lcd. i wish i found this place before i bought the last two.

On this particular monitor, the grounding points all have to be soldered together to the plugs ground wire in order for it to function at all.

man, that looks like a pain in the ***. (the grounding wires)
i hope i don't have to do that with the nec 1530V.
i don't think so cause no one has mentioned it before.
how did you even know that's what you had to do? just cause it did not work when you first tried to turn it back on after taking apart?

It was very obvious once i had it open that the secondary lcd ribbon on the side had to be grounded so i just cut up some wires and soldered all the grounding points. Took all of 5 minutes to do 🙂

Okay, now the next step was to find a converter to go from my dvd player (composite video RGB) to the lcd monitor (xga).
I found a product made by BenQ that will work perfectly and i can get it locally also for only $85.00 CDN 😀 😀
I've attached a pic of the unit, when i pick it up tomorrow i will post the model number if anyone is looking to run their PJ without a computer.

what? you found a place that has it in stock?
not even best buy or comp usa carried video to vga transcoders in stock.
what is this place locally for you that has it?
although best buy told me they used to carry them. (i have no idea why they would stop carrying them as they're becoming more popular now, not less popular)
the only one i can find is online only from compusa, and it's 106.00

The BenQ model number is :
AV BOX V2
This little box takes everything except for component video but has a mas res of 1024*768, as this is my lcd's max res, it works like a dream!!
I'll take some pics later today of my "temp" setup in the basement. I just finished setting up the surround sound setup including a 300 watt 10" dual voice coil double bandpass powered subwoofer i made 🙂
So far, I'm into the entire projection part for $300 and change with a 12ft*10ft screen that is crystal clear!
