LCD monotors

Hey guys, I am new here. I have a question. First off I want you to know I have been reading the forums on LCD projectors for about 3 days now. I bought a 3M ohp (2200 lumens) and it is bright enough for me (it is in my basement which is pitch black) so no worries there. However, I am having a hell of a time with the LCD monitor deal. I know how the concept works (don't really need instructions there) but would very much like for anyone who knows of an "easy" yet "nice" monitor to buy. I tried the "Samsung Syncmaster 15" LCD monitor" that Tom's Hardware guide suggested. this monitor is kick ***🙂 It has the best picture on an LCD monitor I have seen. 400:1 (or 450) contrast and a 25 ms responce time. However, there is a ribbon connecting the two cards together inside and it keeps the dang things covering up a lot of the back side🙁 So we could not use this. Then I bought a NEC 1555v and it has the same dang thing going on with it. My friend used a NEC 1510 (and his went by very nicely) but I cannot find that item for sale anymore, and I would rather buy a newer monitor anyway. I would not consider a lcd panel (those things are not of the quailty I am looking for) so if anyone could tell me a good monitor out there (that you can still buy) I would appreciate it a lot🙂 I do not mind shelling out 300+ bux (US) for it. Thanx much.

There's been quite a few threads about "acceptable" monitors which have been used by people.. I haven't personally side-by-side tested multiple monitors, but I don't think there'll be that much difference, if anything I'd put most emphasis on the contrast. The Benq FP557s has a 400:1 (somethin like that) and 16ms response, one controller card.. if you do a search there's a list of all the NECs which have been used.. or the Samsung 150MP I think has also been used and recommended.

Also.. at 2000 lumens, I bet even more that you won't be able to tell much difference because it won't be too bright. Don't forget you lose 70%+ of the light once you slam the LCD on there. I thought my OHP was the sun until I threw the LCD on there :\

Sadd3i,

Man, thanx for the reply. That helps a lot and gives me hope. My friend is using a ohp with less lumens and his was acceptable, and my ohp is "like the sun" as you said while turned on in my basement, lol. I hope it does not go very dark on me (if it does then I'll just read on some of the light source idea on here) btw, the "Benq FP557s" did you use that yourself? You said there is only one card (great!) but is there anything that needs to be done to it (extending a ribbon ect?) or is it simple? Sorry to bother ya😉

p.s. Do you know a thread that has a lot of those monitors listed? I have been looking at this place all morning at work (in my spare time ofcourse), lol. Thanx

DIY, is cool no matter what you like!

Just wanted to relay my opinion on this matter, if I had 1000 or more to spend on this I would just get an hdtv(samsung)
but because im cheap, i chose the ppanel>ohead route, now my biggest problem with my setup is burnt pixels, i hate this, but because these lcds are old the all seem to have this problem.
Lifter you're lucky to have a high res crt!
but with the way technology is going, we'll probably all look back on this and laugh(while where using 100 sony flat screens)

Greg I hope your right, I heard earlier this year that plasma was/ is supposed to drop by 50% in 6-12 months( January/ April 2004 ish area) I hope this is the case also they said the same for lcd monitors( this was on tech tv) so hopefully it will I would like to have plasmas everywhere, Im even still tempted by the gateway one But Its not even HDTV so Im not going to get it. it will be cool either way. Give it 2 years, remember dvd recorders about 1.5 years ago Just became in exsistance and cost 4,000 now I can get one for my pc for 190-220 area.

Samsung 150MP works!

Samsung 150MP (lcd monitor)
1024x768
300:1 contrast
I can't remember the RS, I think it was 25-30

Yes, I am finally done with my setup (for now, later I will place it in a nice box).

I used the Samsung 150MP 15"LCD monitor and ripped her apart. Only one card is attached to the LCD display (and one smaller card attached to that one card, like daisey chained) and it is toally out of the way. No need for cable extension or anythign at all, just "move it out of the way". Now this monitor lets you hook up anything that will use RGB (PC ofcourse) RCA (audio and video) S-video AND coax (sp? it's for cable). That all alone makes this a nice screen to use. Now I plugged my regular DVD player into it and it did not come out as nice as I would have liked. I then went out and bought a Sony DVD player for my PC and it made a big difference The brightness was still not what I was looking for UNTIL I found the settings on the DVD software that allowed me to change them there as well. MAN that made a huge difference I no longer will need to get a better light source. I am using a 360 watt ENX lamp that came standard with my 3M OHP (2200 lumens) and it is enough to watch even the darkest movies (Pitch Black, or even the cave sceens in LOTR came out fine) and my LCD never got a heat spot on it (but I bought a fan for it anyway just because). Now my screen (full size screen) is 7'x8' or something like that, and my letter box is the same length but the hight comes down a bit (letter box ofcourse) I am going to pull the projector all the way back until it fiils up as much as the wall as possible (without overlaping anything) in letter box mode (full screen mode already fills up the wall, but there is still room left on the sides) take some pics of some movies playing and then post them here. This setup works great and all my friends think it is bad *** I will try and take pics soon. Untilt hen, know that the Samsung 150MP is a good one to buy and it can be bought even at Best Buy right now cost me 495 USD after taxes (there is then a 50 dollar mail-in rebate) have fun.

ok i just won a Sony VPH 1030Q is that one pretty good? or what? what differs then the 1031? i was going the diy lc d route but then i looked at sony crt projectors on ebay and i won this one for 117.50 and its like 54.50 in shipping so what do you think good deal? they have the tubes on in the picture and they look great nice and bright all three work but they dont have a picture running through it think i shoudl risk that or what not....im just looking for input thanks 🙂

Well if you won it on ebay, its a little late to ask if you should risk it....you did win an auction and must buy it. The sony you speak of will do about 720x480 so its not too bad, it just wont take a higher res picture without destroying itself. the 1031q is a nicer PJ, but still you should like this if it works well....enjoy converging the picture

hehe i dont mind spending time on setting up 🙂 its fun for me...but anyways yea i think it will be nice i foung the specs so it looks pretty good it will only do 480p but for my first projector i think it will do ill get a 1031Q next cause it does HDTV and all that nice stuff

thanks
