Ignore functionality not working well

It was reported to me that ignored content was showing during certain posting operations.

On testing I was able to force the situation by simply linking to the post. Shown here, the content is already showing and so are the 'show' buttons.

The Ignore function is so-so glitchy and flawed that I had to clear my twit-list.

It shows ignored material in quotes. (And a stunning number of jerks quote themselves.)

When it actually ignores a post, it does not show a hint that stuff is missing. Then the thread may make no sense.

I have the sense it is not a flag but a toggle. That if an Ignore is Ignored, it shows.

This was noted in the forum sections in the first couple weeks. It was not an emergency then. I am glad it is being taken-up now.

The poster is not quoting themself in post #9. The quote comes from the previous post... Which may be even more unexpected. So if I understand, a quote by someone you're not ignoring is redacted, and it is contained within a post by someone who you are ignoring... but that post is then left visible?

Some coding points worthy of consideration.

a) An ignored member's post should never show if a post is authored by the ignored member. This means, the identity of the poster is enough for an algorithm to decide to ignore content.
b) When a post qualifies to be shown by test 'a', any quotes should subsequently be checked for their authors and those by ignored members should be ignored.

What programming language is used? Can I help to code it?

Yes, Ignore is so erratic that I gave up. AFAICT quotes are NOT ignored. And quotes can be the most offensive passages. Also the quotes appear out of context.

A suggestion. It is hard to test and share with actual Ignorees, for fear of offending them. lcsaszar kindly blanked-out his ignoree but I can't easily do the same to the same ignoree. Can somebody (has to be management) set up an IgnoreMe account and post random junk while others see what Ignore does?

Hello all...

I have looked at the testing thread, and based on what was posted there and my own testing, I see what is apparently one bug and one behaviour change. Let's detail exactly what the scope of the issue is, and I will get it resolved.

Bug 1 - Direct links to ignored user posts show the post content

  • Current behaviour: Clicking a direct link to an ignored member (eg: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...ot-for-general-discussion.386750/post-7034915 ) will show " You are ignoring content by this member. Show ignored content" at the top of the post but then also show the content below.
  • Expected behaviour: The post will contain " You are ignoring content by this member. Show ignored content" but not show the content.

Bug 2 - Ignored posts are not shown (behaviour change from vBulletin)

In vBulletin the post was shown with a "this post is hidden" toggle that lets you know the post exists. In XF the post is completely hidden. I think XF's mode of operation is a feature, not a bug. If you don't want someone in your head, you don't want to see their footsteps in the sand walking along side you either. Happy to discuss further.

I like the completely hidden post of XF.
I'll agreeably DIS-agree. Holes in the thread are just as spooky as footsteps walking alongside you. There may be no universal answer.

(You could ask the user "Ignore PRR utterly and completely, or note PRR's presence without content?" But that's piling code upon code just to protect ourselves from our weakness.)

But THANK YOU Jason for looking into this.
