However, it is the subset that produces the 'reformed audiophile' types we see around here who want to warn everyone not to buy expensive junk like they once did.
Those would be the ones that forgot how to listen after doing improper DBT's? I have to say what you describe as listening has no appeal to me at all, certainly not anymore. Probably as little interest as you have in going back to grad school for advanced signal processing.
Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit -
Pocket... They used an expletive in the URL, which DIYAudio wont parse...
"Through their training, scientists are equipped with what Sagan calls a “baloney detection kit” — a set of cognitive tools and techniques that fortify the mind against penetration by falsehoods:
The kit is brought out as a matter of course whenever new ideas are offered for consideration. If the new idea survives examination by the tools in our kit, we grant it warm, although tentative, acceptance.
The kit, Sagan argues, isn’t merely a tool of science — rather, it contains invaluable tools of healthy skepticism that apply just as elegantly, and just as necessarily, to everyday life. By adopting the kit, we can all shield ourselves against clueless guile and deliberate manipulation."
Interesting read. "Everyday life". It's a lot of work, just to live a life in a healthy way!

We have a small dog and are often amused (and joke about) how he naturally seeks out and finds anything "a little bit better". This can include a piece of cardboard he lays upon instead of just the boards of a sunny deck, and especially anything other than his own food.
To him, better means anything that makes his sense perceptions distinguish a superior situation; Our food is better than his, a pile of clothes is better than the carpet, the raised back of a chair is better than the floor level (he's short...), my leg is better than the sofa cushion to place his head upon.
To me, FR speakers sound better than the ordinary designs with a crossover that I've been exposed to. The difference may be as much as the piece of cardboard is to our dog, but the preference due to however minuscule the perception may be is there - and enough to be acted upon. I think the acted upon is the important part; "better" is a sense perception that's enough to motivate one to take a consequent action - after experiencing it.
Very nice... if it ain't Scottish its crap...
An actual experiment? The video starts playing then stops after a few seconds
Ah, shame it's not working for you. It's a classic demonstration of self delusion.
Basically, a bunch of people are given personal readings in a sealed envelope.
They all read their reading, privately and are interviewed about it on camera.
They all enthuse about how well the process has read them, how right and personally correct it is.
Then Derren reveals that the all had *exactly* the same piece of paper!
They have read into it what they wanted........
...what is the smallest degree of phase shift or more accurately time difference that you (or anyone else) can perceive as a shift in image or responsible for "smearing"?
Don't know that it has been studied in the lateral perceived width case we have been talking about. In that case phase shift would appear to really time shift, in other words not the same phase for every frequency. Also, it appears to be dynamically changing (shuffled) which is some ways may make it more noticeable than it might otherwise be.
...as little interest as you have in going back to grad school for advanced signal processing.
Haha! Many interests here as you may have gleaned. More of that is on the list, but I know enough its not holding me up as much as not having expertise programming FPGAs. Maybe that one will be the next thing to take on. Unfortunately, filters and modulators tend to have a sound (as can been seen from experimenting with HQ Player, and from comparing the sound of DACs), so its not just about getting a mathematically correct algorithm, nor just about computational expense. There is more than a lifetime of stuff to explore, and not that much time left for me. My main purpose is to stay engaged rather sit watching TV.

True, "laziness" makes it very tempting not to question enough, something the deceivers know all too well. How many times does a politian very politely, and often condecendingly, simply not answer a question until the questioner has to give up because they run out of time?Interesting read. "Everyday life". It's a lot of work, just to live a life in a healthy way!
Ah, thank you. Yes, I'm aware I'm guilty of that sometimes, makes me wonder how many times I'm not aware....They have read into it what they wanted........
Like the following quote? To be reigning king of snideness 😉
"If you put half as much effort into listening as you do policing others
.... maybe you too could become a subjectivist."
He's been waiting for you to answer questions asked by others long enough.Instead of asking questions and or holding off forming opinions when data is lacking, you often seem to jump to the worst possible conclusions (and you often give the worst possible examples as objections).

I affiliate "laziness" with not doing those things you don't like doing. (For better or worse) from an early age I was diagnosed with a mental health condition called "AOID" or "Attention to Other things more Interesting Disorder" that my psychiatrist has failed to cure me. Fortunately questioning is strongly supported by my AOID... though taking out the garbage not so much.
Where’s your sense of humor EH!
btw I think you may have forgotten to include the smiley that was after that quote.

The "fact" you couldn't quote...
, has to be the all time classic.
"The fact that you’ve brainwashed yourself into thinking there’s no difference in sound between amplifiers (in my case integrated amps) amazes me."

Nice to see I’ve reached dossier status!
Not sure what you meant by the fact I couldn’t quote though?
Edit.....never mind, I get it now......I never provided proof with my statement.
You act as if that statement mattered, it’s just me thinkin out loud!

Names and biographies are not needed. I have described them as trusted skilled listeners.
Nothing more is needed, I'm just waiting to see if you have any friends that prefer a $150 DAC to the Benchmark and want to be included in the fun.

My Gosh - I have the exact same thing!! (Just ask my wife...) I never knew there was a name for it. I know what ADHD is because I've heard of it, but never AOID. I suppose you're just making this up...

The poor bathroom cabinet frame refinish just sits for months now, mostly because I cant figure out how to sand one part without cross-grain sanding another - am I supposed to sand with better than 1mm resolution over inches of length? Demo the whole thing, sand it and reassemble?
The Lounge conversations are - somehow - a lot more interesting than figuring out that one (and if anyone has input, I'd be glad to hear it

I reckon so, although: Attention to Other things more Interesting Disorder - Google Search 😉
Joe, If it’s flat, a random orbital sander will work......hit it with 100 grit then finish with 220 grit,
nobody will ever know except you!
nobody will ever know except you!
I find I'm interested in figuring out and planning how to do something, actually doing it is boring because it seems I've already done it in my head.
