The newer surveillance cameras usually send the images somewhere else, like across the internet, often only when there's motion detected so they don't use as much storage. But the images don't do a whole lot of good, for catching the thieves, unless someone can recognize one of the thieves, or if someone monitors the feed in real time and can alert the police in time to intercept them. The images could also be good for evidence, later, if someone did get caught.
