Ideas on PA Sub(s)

Hey everyone

I'm looking for ideas on what to do for low end reinforcement.

I'm I play in a country/western band with shows usually between 50-150 people, though we seem to be ever-growing. My priority is efficiency; like many small bands I'm lucky to have more than 1 20 amp circuit at my disposal. Honestly anything below 50Hz is just a bonus. I'd prefer a strong 50-100 than the ability to hit 30. I currently use 2 subs measuring 24x24x16 inches and my SUV is completely packed, so unless I can somehow build something that fits into a 24x48x16 hole, I'm going to have to come up with a trailer. So size isn't a huge concern. I also don't have a huge budget, I'd be nice to build something with 10's or 12's so that I don't have to spend $250 on each driver.

I have experience with front-loaded horns and love them, but I have not used or heard a tapped horn. I've always been a bit curious about Fitzmaurice's designs, particularly the Titans as they seem to check a lot of my boxes, but I'm a bit put off by a couple of things. The T39 shows a 5db drop in sensitivity between 90 and 70, and the T48 shows twice that between 65 and 50. I'm a bit worried that EQing that out would squash my headroom. The other issue isn't technical, but I've always thought it was a bit odd that his forum members rave about his designs, but outside of his forum support is spotty to say the least.

TL;DR I'd appreciate a recommendation for plans for a FLH or TH sub with efficiency between 50-100Hz as well as cost being the primary concerns. Thank you!

Hi JWil;

Take a look at the Danley THMini. 22.5” X 22.5” X 15” each. Goes solid down to 42Hz and punches way above their weight. They hit your sweet spot dead on.

I don’t know if there are plans out in the world for DIY though. One would think there may be.

I have these and love them. I bought four and then made eight more with the JBL 2206’s I had laying around.

Barry.

That looks like a sweet sub, though I'm not excited about spending ~$2500 right now.

But that did lead me to find mRsGr's PAL12, which looks very interesting and I may do something like that.

It seems that most tapped horns are designed with 35Hz or lower extension in mind, and I just wonder what the results of designing one that only needed to hit 50Hz would be. Could greater sensitivity and/or output be achieved between 50 and 100? I need to learn how to use hornresp

Take a look at the THAM series. IIRC, the 15" goes to 45Hz and the 12" goes to 55Hz. A high-power 12" going to 55Hz should have a decent amount of output.
