icon audio frm 1 speakers

From their website:

Are there any shortcomings?
All types of loudspeakers have shortcomings, they have the highest distortion of any part of the hi fi chain. Each type of design having its own set of problems. Like other electrostatic and co-axial speakers the FRm range are a little more directional and have a more tightly defined listening area.

Yeah, so, it's an 8" driver and it starts beaming quite low. Ha ha.
Gotta love marketing.... "a little more directional..."

I know the guys at Icon slightly; we were in nearby demo rooms at the last two North West Audio Shows. They're much better than some in the industry.

I liked their room as it happens. Didn't get chance to listen to it, but I just liked walking in, since one wall was more or less filled with racks on which they were displaying most of their many valve amps & other hardware. Since aesthetically speaking I'm a sucker for amplifiers with big vintage analogue meters, suited me. 😉

Hmmmm... Claims of rare earth magnets, and ferrite in the pictures.

I'd have to dispute the "Deeper bass than any other design for the size", though, as they haven't escaped Hoffman's Iron Law. I've got some drivers here that'll delve deeper in a smaller box, but efficiency will likely be sub-80dB@1w.

Apart from that, they look okay if you're into full-range drivers. I've come to the conclusion that they're not for me.

Yes, there are a few somewhat questionable pieces on there, such as the 'rare earth' phrase, which from appearance is simply incorrect, and the 'deeper bass' part which -well, maybe it does, although I doubt it.

That said, I've seen worse errors from manufacturers. The wire brigade come to mind. 😉
