As some here may know I'm working on a DAC. The DAC board is "ready" on a gerber file, not sent to be made yet.
As building one longer panelized board is way cheaper than having several small boards done, I'm going to add other small boards I will need.
A pair of these are buffers to drive i2s and control through HDMI.
Octal LVDS Line driver
CMOS side: Headers (5*2 and 3*2) (half ground)
Line side: 1 HDMI connector, differential LVDS line drivers.
Using TI's Octal chips. It's enough to transmit 8ch of i2s + 3 command signals. Not enough to send 8ch of DSD though, but not many people should need it anyway.
For each board: chip 7$, board (4 layers, useless there but my boards are 4 layers...) 15$, connectors, reg, "idle" mode jumpers etc... say 10$. Count 5$ each board for me soldering it.
Mostly "non profit", just some around here may be looking for it to get rid of SPDIF.
So should be around 80$ the pair.

I don't see the point in going optical... Would cost much more. The only advantage would be to run it over longer distances, and I choosed Firewire oE for this. Optical fiber fort such short distances is very expensive, you need to have the machine to solder the connectors etc...
Honestly, you should be able to run several feets on HDMI cable.

Note: to answer question, it is enough to transmit 2 channels of DSD.
It is enough to transmit 6 channels of DSD for 5.1 also.
You can transmit: up to 7 channels of DSD,
Up to 14 channels of i2s,
up to 56 channels of i8s,
Should be enough for most of us xD

It is part of the DAW hardware I'm building. Using the Dice by TC electronics.

I'll give you 3d modelisation. Boards are not made yet, as I'm going to send quite a bunch of these at a time.
I think I'm going to buy my new hard drive right now, as it started to loose clusters - and bits of Altium gone to dust. 3d viewer died and I have to adjust coordinates manually because he uses an imperial grid vertically and metric grid horizontally (not kidding).
So as soon as my computer is up and running again I'll post this image. (probably tomorrow).
