Hi
I have a Pi with Volumio and a PCM5102 DAC which works well. I would like to upgrade to something better and like the idea or XLR.
Would this work:
Aiyima Update ES9028Q2M ES9028 I2S input Decoders Mill Board DAC Decode Board With Balanced Output For Amplifier DIY
Aiyima Update ES9028Q2M ES9028 I2S input Decoders Mill Board DAC Decode Board With Balanced Output For Amplifier DIY-in Amplifier from Consumer Electronics on Aliexpress.com | Alibaba Group to Clipboard

Bumping my own thread. I've read this board works fine with their USB to i2s adaptor. Is there any reason it would not work with the pi i2s?

Of course it would work with a RPi; adding an USB-to-I2S bridge will open the possibility to play music via a wider range of audiophile music rendering software on a wider hardware platform (PC, MAC, Linux boxes).
What makes the signal not ideal?Pi is not a very good I2S source. If it could work with Allo Kali or similar though....
Lots of jitter and noise due to bad power supplies and clock. You'll need something like the Kali to reclock the signal and possibly an isolator to remove the noise from the Pi power supplies. With the added cost you might be better off waiting for Allo's new Katana stack that uses the same chip family and takes care of all of the above issues.
Plus I don't think the Pi has drivers to play native DSD if that's something you want to try.
