On the front is just the lens mount. You can make your own or rip one out of an old OHP. It looks like he made a focusing assembly attached to it. That you may have to make yourself.
IR filters prevent unwanted heat from traveling through an optical system.
I'd recommend Heat Absorbing Glass over regular IR or Hot Mirrors. They tend to pass more visible light without reflecting the heat back to the source or in one direction.

That depends on the size your looking for. If your short on funds at the moment you might be better off going to a local glass shop and seeing what they have. Explain what you want to do and they should be able to recommend something.
