Hi All,
I'm new to this Tube preamp thing. I dont have any experience welding anything except huge material when I was at my Industrial Mecanical school 20 years ago.
I'm trying to figure out what type of Amp I need ( Phono Tube or Stereo Tube ??).
I do sample based music but I love Tube and Tape texture and I would like to apply my own on some specific tracks of my music.
That would be my signal path:
DAW -> Ur28M output -> Tube Amp -> Ur28M Input -> record in DAW
So what I want to use it for is for coloration of the sound.
Again, correct me if I'm wrong in any point of this message but I think that I'll need a Tube amp that work with 12AX7 ....Am I correct ?
I'd like to buy some different Tubes and play with them to understand and hear their colorations on sounds....so if its possible, I would love an Amp that would not restrict me to only one category of Tube.
Is it Possible ??
If any of you have any DIY or prebuilt Tube amp to propose for my specific purpose (Sound texturisation), I would really appreciate.
Thank you very much for your time .

Tube Amp For DJ
Not to pour water on your parade but, you may want to consider one of the software emulator packages available for guitarists'. I say this based on the assumption that most of your sampling setup is computer based already and the emulators are getting very close to the real thing. They can sound fantastic depending on the maker. You would also be able to try before you buy on many version since they will offer a 15 day trial period. As for coloration of sound, one of the emulation packages let's you change the tube line up in the amp.
Learning to build tube amps will take a large amount of time, a good amount of funding, and tuning the amp after the fact is a whole other story. It can be worth it if that is what you want to do. I started about 6 years ago after not reading a thing on tubes since the 60's and it's a great way to stay intellectually active.
Consider also building or purchasing something like a Pultec EQ. That is a tube equalizer that would simplify and may best fit with your design goals.
Good luck,
colorcat.
