I'll bump this.
I, too, would love a cheap AES out of the PC. Just PCI bus to AES balanced out, basically. No need for DACs, ADC, etc. Just good old digital out.
All the soundcards I've seen with AES/EBU are very expensive pro models. Don't need 90% of what they have, just the AES/EBU out.
Failing that, how about an inexpensive SPDIF out card that would lend itself to AES/EBUmods?
Anybody know?

Yeah, good thought. Running the spdif thru a 75:100 transfo is probably the way to go.
Of course, I had forgotten about the SndScape Odeum
TG-Link Sound Card. :duh: I've used it and it works real well. It's a $100 digital out only card. BNC, Optical and TG-Link. Not a super cheap card, but it does work well and will do up to 192/24 - tho I've only tested it to 96/24. That's all it does, digtal out.
Might just convert my inputs to bnc spdif and be done with it.

I am looking for basically the same AES/EBU out, except that I will use a laptop with PCMCIA, USB, or Ethernet connection.
Ideally it'll be something with the lowest latency attainable, because the sound chain originates in the laptop, goes out thru firewire into an external digital mixer and back via the same firewire. Finally the laptop needs to output digitally via the mentioned ports... into an AES/EBU processor.
Thanks
A more careful search yielded several alternatives:
A DAC input section
kit that does USB to SPDIF (no AES/EBU though), looks interesting though.
And several built choices:
Trends UD-10.1 USB Audio Converter (Transport)
.:. Looks like the best but too many functions and bulky for a mobile solution
Hagerman HagUsb USB-to-S/PDIF Converter
(now an AES/EBU alternative exists)
.:. The new AES/EBU version appears to be just what i'm looking for.
