I have seen "peg-board" used this way.

An 8"x8" panel of 1/4" holes on 1" centers seems to be ~roughly~ the hole-area you propose, without getting out a router.

Hmmm, pegboard holes may be less than 1/4". But a drill, even hand-drill, even sharp scissors as reamers, would fix that fast. Start by doing half the holes, try, then open some more up. When the bass goes-away, plug some holes (ducttape), or grab another panel and open-up just a good amount.

Basically this spoils the +6dB boom-peak. Not a lot of sub-peak extension. The speakers and box are too small to make Phil Lesh's deep boom. But tons of music has been enjoyed on speakers without deep bass. "Pop" music often favors a boom. Depends on listener and room too.
