"Just curious about the choice of the 5965, it's not the most linear tube around"

I agree: I wouldn't use this tube for single ended; for single ended I use the 6N23P-EV. I used the 5965 in a PP amp with a little feedback. The amp is inspired by the "El Cheapo" by Eli Duttman. One has several different possible choices for a tube with a mu of around 40. I chose the 5965 because they seem to have the best looking plate curves compared to the 12AT7 and 6072 family.

The 12AV7 seems to have even better plate curves and I will try that next. The 6N3P seems to be pretty good at about -2V bias, but all these tubes seem to have a lot of 2nd harmonic distortion. These tubes need to be used PP or with a plate CCS load to take advantage of the horizontal load line. One good point about these tubes is that they are cheap and there is a large variety to choose from.

Thanks Everyone, Especially Jerluwoo,Bear, and others

Hi All, I can't thank you enough, But There is one subject I have heard of that
I am not familiar with, and that is a CCS, Constant current source, and
LED Biasing, is that really worth it when you have only -2.1V on the
Grids? What about linearity, how does one determine how linear one
driver tube from another and what to look for...? I have seen Interstage
transformers and also heaters with chokes in line as well as plate chokes
why need all of this extra parts when the KISS in SE Amplifiers are best?
Anyway, I am learning, but I still don't know a whole lot about tube
design, But, I have a feeling one has to also have the equipment to test
and also someone to mentor you thru several circuits and have hands on
training is just indespensible; agreed! One can study the Piano for many
many years and come to a remarkable understanding of theory, but
without keyboard technique, experience in playing in Ensemble's It would
be still foreign and one would never really know the piano at all! Anyway
Thanks, pianolydia
