Hypex UcD2kOEM Bass Power Amp Project

Having said that, I think a tube preamp with a class D power amp is a perfect combination (or compromise) for a bass amp. You get a nice tube sound from the preamp and a great watts-to-weight ratio from the power amp.

Nice job on both pieces. I've done a few kindred builds, you can find the build threads on Talkbass and pics in the Musical Instruments sticky here. I've been wanting to try one of the bigger Hypex modules for a DIY bass rig myself, heard many good things about them.

Thanks, cool stuff you have there!

I really like the Hypex modules. I had used their 180W module for another project before, so when my old power amp (Peavey IPR) died, a new Hypex-based amp felt like a natural replacement.

I can highly recommend the UcD2k/SMPS3k combination for a power amp. The modules will probably last a lifetime and the power should be enough for any reasonable rig.

How many fEARful cabs are you going to power with that rig? The UcD700/SMPS1.2K combo was more like what I was contemplating using in my last build, until an ICE 700ASC sort of fell into my lap. My days of rocking big outdoor stages are long gone.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

I only power a single 15/6 so this amp is a bit of an overkill, but I don't see any problem with that. I also considered using the UcD700 at first, but I thought it better not to save in the power department and then possibly regret it later.

The UcD2k datasheet says 1600W into 8Ω, 2500W into 4Ω and 2000W into 2Ω.The UcD700 is only 360W into 8Ω, which I feared might not be enough for a single fEARful in all situations.

Yep, my fEARful 12/6 was definitely happier with a little more power than that. I mostly gig with a single 4 ohm 112 these days though, and eventually got tired of lugging around a 1000 watt power amp to run it with. In any case, I am all in for overkill when it comes to headroom.
