ALL that money, time and effort for a mediocre (but cool!) projector.

ya and dangerous
A complete mini-ITX system, provided you use slimline drives, will fit in a shoebox size. They have built-in everything, and one PCI slot. You just need to add ram, hard drive, and optical drive. And like I said, if you use a slimline laptop drive, you can make an amazingly compact little system. The mini-itx boards are really geared for video playback, with built-in mpeg2 decoders and 5.1 surround. A 1ghz board is in the $200 price range.
It could be done, but like Ace said... unless it's designed the right way (not like the photos shown) your taking a big risk.

How would one go about connecting a slimline laptop drive to a desktop PC? Laptop drives use smaller interfaces. I know how to convert a laptop hard drive to a standard 40pin IDE, but how would I convert a laptop DVD drive to IDE?
(I decided out of nowhere to gut an old DVD player and put a computer in it... the DVD-ROM drive that I took apart is still too big to fit well.)
Thanks...
