HT DIY kit recommendations?

I am looking for some good value DIY speakers for my new media room. It is a converted garage 19'x20' approx 4500 ft^3. I have been looking at the DIYSG HT-12s for L+C+R. I have never seen them in stock in the 1.5yr+ I have been wanting to buy them.

What other kits should I consider?

If you can build your own cabinets:

Paul Carmody's DIY Speaker Pages - Home Theater Speakers

The Meniscus Audio site says that the Hi Vi drivers are discontinued but you might find them on line.

Or you could consider:

Tritrix_pg_3

These come in MTM and TM, as well as the MTM transmission lines. Simple crossovers and, depending where you live, good value drivers.

They sound great for the price, I built the MTMs and have them on stands for stereo speakers. If you built three of those - one for centre - and used the TMs for rear speakers, that should really fill up your space with sound. You will probably need a sub as the MTMs don't have as much bass as the transmission lines.

If Faital driver prices are reasonable in France, and you can build your own cabinets:
Humble Homemade Hifi designed the Mezzo Calpamos using Faital 12PR320-8 HF108R-8 LTH102

If you have future plans to bi-amp and add a woofer, bottom side-side woofers can cancel vibration... like BMF1 design.

Jim Holtz/Curt Campbell's Statement series has large floor standers (II), Smaller Floor standers (Mini), bookshelf (monitor) and centre, not sure if the drivers are all still available or available where you are but these get generally good reviews/comments. They also have the slightly less expensive Tritix series that are again available in different formats. All plans and BOMs are on their site.

There are currently 2, HT12's ( full kits ) currently in stock ( at this time + date ) .

🙂

I have yet to buy a screen. I was thinking of building a box on the wall with the speakers inside and behind a screen in a baffle wall. The DIYSG HTM-12 seems like a good option for this.

Benefits to this plan are that the L+C+R speakers are out of sight and out of the way. Also speakers can be simply finished since they are out of sight.

What are the drawbacks to this plan? The L+R may have to be closer together than ideal?

I am open to suggestions as to why I should go a different way.

Here's what I see;

Perhaps these aren't available to you because when I go to this page I put a pair into the "cart" ( to check quantity availability ) effectively reserving them for a limited bit of time .

I imagine that means the pair aren't available to anyone else to buy until the software auto-releases them ( from my cart ) once I decline to proceed with the purchase.

IOW; try again in a few 10's of minutes.

🙂

Stupid me, I saw the picture and assumed that was just an add-on flat pack.

I am not in a hurry and can wait if the HTMs are coming back.

I am mostly looking for confirmation that building these and sticking them behind a screen is the way to go.

Or, am I just unaware of better ways to go for similar $$$?

For the price the DIYSG stuff can't be beat since the kits are full on kits ( which include knock-down cabinets and assembled crossovers, if wanted ).

One would spend years of education ( learning software and hardware packages ) just to achieve similar ( at the DIYSG price point ).

Compression drivers ( on horns ) can of course be located behind a perf screen.

The movie-threatre world has been doing so for about a 100 years now.

🙂

What size screen will you purchase? Will you attach the screen to the 17' or 19' wall? A large screen might "set the stage" for corner speakers.

I would not put the speakers behind the screen because that would reduce sound quality, waste some area behind the screen, and reduce the flexibility of alternate speaker placement for critical listening. Many speakers need to be rotated to get controlled stereo directivity at the listeners.

The screen will be along a 20' wall. I will start out just projecting onto a painted wall. I have a Epson 3800 around 14.5' back. It will zoom out to just under 150" diagonal.

I am trying to have more of a living room feel and less of a dedicated theater feel.

If I build a box on the wall to hide my front speakers that would go a long way towards that goal.

I am trying to understand what I will be giving up sound quality wise if anything.

If my seating position is 12' from a 142" screen then the center of L & R speakers behind the screen could be around 20 degrees off center which is just outside of the Dolby guidelines.
