Hi guys,
Heres whats going on:
Im planning on building an projector.
The problem is that I searched and read so much about light/displays etcetc. that I dont know what right or wrong anymore.
Now I have a guestion about the lightsource (forgive me some must have seen this questions a thousand times before...):
- How many lumens do you absolutely need (I figured 10000+, correct?)
- Here in Holland, a real Metal Halide lamp is really hard to find. But I think I found an sort of alternative:
OSRAM HQI-E 150W/NDL E27 CLEAR HALOGEEN METALDAMPLAMP 54X141MM 11400 LUMEN FITTING E27
or
OSRAM HQI-T 400W/N E40 HALOGEEN METALDAMPLAMP 46x275MM 42000 LUMEN FITTING E40
Now my question is, are these light suitable, and do you also need a ballast with one of these (halogeen hqi lamp) like you need one when using a "real" metal halide lamp?
I know cooling is VERY important.
thnx guys.....

These are REAL MetalHalide lamps🙂
Try to find HQI-TS 250W/NDL (double-ended, UVfilter, 20000lm output, fc2 socket) instead of HQI-E (not suitable shape)...
Yes, as for all MH bulbs You need ballast. You can buy electronic ballast (~120euros) or go traditional way: ballast + ignitor + capacitor (~35euros). There is no big difference IMHO, besides price🙂

hqi is the same as metal hallide hqi is the expression used by osram, phillips calls it hpi .
T stands for single end (usually e40 fitting , somewhat like a normal lamp) TS (like hqi-ts) is a double ended lamp, fc2 is the standard here
get an hqi-ts 400 watt fc-2 fitting......complete set will be around 120-130 euros,(including lamp and postage and postage)
I am trying to order at the moment, i will let you know if it all works out....or you can go to a growshop and get an hqi set .

Does someone knows a good online shop to order hqi-ts bulb complete with ingitor ballast capacitor and, most important and rare in Italy, fc2 socket all over Europe????
In Italy is very hard to get a shop who sells all we need to set up a working lightsource.
Thanks a lot
Michele

HQI the same as Metal Halide?
yeah it is but its under a higher presure, thats how they get them so small and so bright, they up the presure in the gasses so its like the same ingredient as the big ones but its crammed into a smaller package, they also use a slightly different strand of gass to get it abit brighter, the CDM-T i have is actually different , it has ceramic in it rather then just the glass in the middle. HQI lamps are also more colour constant, that means when they get older they tend to keep their original colour at start of life longer.

What is the wattage of your CDM-T? And why did you choose that over the HQI-TS ?
Thanks

n/m, saw one of your post that you use 150w cdm-t.

high watage rate for CDM-T bulb is 150W. It is smaller, less heat. very good color and brightness consistance even at the end of its life (even better than HQI).

well i used that bulb basically because all of what 18wheeler just said lol i use small lcd's so i dont need such a big bulb, and i wanted to make the projector as small as possible, im using a 150w CDM-T, even though it will work on the 15inch lcd's i wouldnt recomend it, the 250w HQI is the way to go on the larger lcd's because it has abit more power, about 6000lm more, and because with a larger lcd you will be covering a larger area u will need that extra light, places where to purchase CDM-T bulbs from is dj lighting shops or comercial stage lighting shops, and can be had for around about $40.
