I've been reading through the archives from this site, and have learned a tremendous amount. Thank you all! It just makes me think about how my life might have been different if the internet had been around 20 years ago -- as a kid I was always tinkering with radios and amplifiers and such, but I never really figured out what I was doing. There wasn't anyone around to teach me the basics, and the books I could get from the library were too vague to be of any help to me. I successfully built a few kits, but my attempts to do things on my own usually ended up producing lots of smoke and very little sound! 🙂 So I ended up going the software route, and now I'm a computational linguist. I like my job, but who knows? If I could have gotten the kinds of info I've gleaned from the achives here back in my formative years, I'd probably be an engineer now.

So anyway, I'm now collecting the parts for my first real DIY audio project (not counting cables and such): a phono stage based on Rod Elliott's PCBs. Thanks!

Hello, Rob M

Hello, Rob M
you are from California.

Rod Elliots site is a good place to be.
Always some new things to discover and to learn. 😉

When one has succeded to build a good phono pickup,
you can manage most in amplifiers.
They require great skills.
High amplification - several filtering frequecies
and great concern about the board layout.
Phono amps are really a challenge!

I guess you have some Vinyls to play
and a Turntable.

What do you do in the field of computational linguistics?
I understand it has to do with language/communication
and Computers.

/halo uses his linguistic abilities, too 😎

Rob M, welcome... we are a little down... Do not underestimate this forum, please. This is the world as we see it. We are travelers in time and space and if you can spare the time... we are the best friends. But you know what rob, if you hook up with us you found the best friends around. Power to halojoy!

Re: Hello, Rob M

Thanks for the kind greetings!

I build statistical models of language use, for information extraction, automatic translation, that sort of thing. Basically, all the jobs you wish google could do for you, but it can't yet.
I spent the last few years working on Dutch, but now that I'm back in the US I can turn to English again.
