How would I go about making a DIY CD player?

I know very little about CD players and audio equipment but this seems like a good way to learn. How would I go about creating a CD player? Not from scratch, I would buy the drive, etc and make it look cool. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

You can indeed buy CD/DVD drives, but I'm unsure about the other necessary doodahs that you've conveniently lumped under "etc".

Some CD players consist of little more than a CD drive, main circuit board, display board and power transformer (see attachment).

I'd be inclined to obtain a second hand working unit to obtain those items, then rehouse them in a way that looks cool - but stays electrically safe!

How about a Steam Punk CD player for instance? 😎

Yeah, I was thinking that way too. Guido's site and also Daisy-Laser (in the archive) .

A Ggl search on "diy cd player kit" turns up some interesting hits, including a project paper and an actual kit !

Kit is discontinued and given the current price of a CD Pro 2 it might be best to use a donor player as a base.

Hi, you can make it with an usb cd, dvd player/ writter, and a rasberry pi with a DAC board . Also you can add display, controls.
