How to tune a sub box

I’m totally new to this whole speaker design thing.
I have a setup their car subs but for home use see photo below it’s the box with the 2 12” subs in it, the box was designed for 2 10” subs but I put 2 12” in it and it sounds crap how do I tune it? Is it possible for the 2 12” to work? Do I just start adding cloth to get the box volume smaller? It’s a sealed box with no chambers.
Thanks

You may infact be running everything out of phase so you will get no bass at all,

check all the woofers cone movment with a small voltage source, you only need say 5 volts and mark the positive and negative terminals on all your speakers.

one question, Why do you have so many woofers in your room?

If you want more bass just replace the 10 inch cones in your 3 way floor stanind speakers or run one woofer in a corner.

The more speakers you run from one amplifier the worse the sound quality gets and you will only fry the amplifier.

from the looks of things you have a 0.5 to 2 ohm load on your poor amplifier.

It sounds like its out of phase but its not.
I’m a bass freak after low bass lol you cant kill my Yamaha amp🙂
I’m going for one sub I’m selling them and making a real subsonic woofer low frequencies like 10hz or so.
I have reversed the phase it also depends on the signal you get good bass at a certain hz; then at another you don’t but you can reverse the phase and get it good again its weird, I used a frequency sweep and test tones I made.
4 ohm loads just using rears and canter for the subs

I’m turning 21 soon, I’m running the second cd player to the third device which is a amp to drive the towers and a 10” sub on the rear channel then it goes into the bottom amp to feed the 2 12” subs they all get good power.

But when I hook up the single 12” in the mdf box it has more bass then the whole setup, it is strange.

Hey,

What i mean by using a seprate amp is an amp that has no input selector, no tone contorl or anything like that-no preamp.
Just an amp itself, something like a gainclone (just an example, not enough power from a single chip for a subwoofer that size) or a monoblock amp! you could also build the BPA-200 or 300. you also have to run the subs with a filter. you could try building a low pass filter, and put it between the amp that drives the towers and the amp that drives the suboowfers!(if thats how it is at the monemt)

I do not want to sound harsh, but sticking two larger drivers in a box designed for something else is not a recipe for good sound. I suggest getting a copy of WINISD PRO http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?pageid=winisdpro
and entering the parameters for the two 12" drivers you have and seeing what box will work. You may be able to modify the box you have (change volume or add ports etc) to improve the response. There are many helpful people on these forums, I am sure you will get some good suggestions and/or help.

Perhaps you can tell us the brand and model of those drivers and the dimensions of the current box.

Sorry I cant give any more help than this, I am departing in morning away for a week or so.

Good luck though!

Thanks I’ll use the program and see what it comes up with I hope WINISD PRO isn’t to complicated I haven’t designed speakers before.

Do you know what’s hilarious? When I didn’t know much about speakers a couple of years ago I had a 12” sub that one in the mdf box(in photo) filled with cloth and not making much noise it was dead. Not to long ago I pulled it apart and discovered I'd used audio canceling cloth lol now it works much better😉

O yes the 2 12" are clarion pa12-s here is the Specifications

When you put a random woofer in a random enclosure the sound will be **** most of the times.

As you can see on the specification sheet of your 12" woofers, a single woofer requires about 30 L to get down to 65 Hz in a sealed box. Two woofers would requires double the volume, about 60 L.

In your case you use 2 woofers in a way too small sealed enclosure, causing no low bass.

According to the specification sheet these woofers should be put in a ported enclosure to get decent low bass. WinISD gives a 129 L ported enclosure for two of these drivers, resulting in a F3 of 37.8 Hz.
